* A Tribute To Ario Bayu Putro *
The Party Must Go On!
Known to some as an electronic pop band and to others as an alternative dance outfit—. Bimbim Slank says, “They’re like Downunder band INXS”—PopOut was formed in Jakarta by two old friends and alumni of the Jalan Potlot community, Massto Sidharta (vocals + Music Programming + drums) and Ario Bayu Putro (guitar + Music programming). The duo started jamming together in 2012, melding influences like Depeche Mode, Stereo MC's, Dan Reed Network, U2, EMF, and Chemical Brothers with a keen sense for carrying a song through the rhythm—both Massto and Ario are best known as drummers. In PopOut, the two step out from behind the kit to take on new instruments and experiment with a variety of audio software to create their unique sound.
PopOut is gearing up for the release of their first single in February 2015, followed by their freshman album debut in the near future.
PopOut’s songs traverse a variety of topics, including current social issues with songs like “Fasilitasi” (Facilitation), a track revealing the condition of public facilitation overlooked by the government. “Tanpamu Aku Halu” (Without You, I’m Hallucinating), the band’s first single, “celebrates” the club hopper’s extravagancies. “Jomblo” (Single/Solitary) is steeped in innuendo on a person searching for his mate.
PopOut’s debut album, featuring twelve original songs—nine in Indonesian and three in English—will hit the Indonesian market soon. The album features a number of renowned musicians, including Anda Perdana (Matajiwa), IndraQ (BIP), Ezra Simanjuntak and Tyo (ZiFactor), Njet and Boris (The Flowers), Damon Koeswoyo and Koko (Kidnap Katrina and Sule).
Massto Sidharta, a respected drummer and the younger brother of Bimbim Slank. In 1993, together with Anang, Damon Koeswoyo, Gorgha, Teguh and Koko, Massto created the band Kidnap Katrina. Ario Bayu, a well known “graduate” of Jalan Potlot, has collaborated with a number of musicians and contributed to bands like Imanez and Otto Jam, Oppie Andaresta and BOP, and DFS. Throughout most of the 1990s, Ario was known around town as a drummer, but beginning in the 2000s he transitioned to the guitar.
Well before their debut album, PopOut attracted a loyal following with a remake of Kidnap Katrina’s “Biru,” which featured on the soundtrack for film Mika (2012).
The first PopOut album production was initiated by French label Atleliers 79 as a “Paris Jakarta Express” project to promote local talent in Indonesia and create opportunities for bands to hit the International market. The band is already laying the groundwork for a sophomore album, which will feature more English language songs, in preparation for an international release through Ateliers 79. Piyu, Managing Director for UpBeat Publishing and Ateliers 79’s Indonesian partner, will play a major role in presenting and promoting PopOut.
In 2015, PopOut will perform regularly at Fez Dungeon in Kemang, Jakarta, as part of The Beat Room concert series. The Beat magazine, media sponsor for the project. - “Paris Jakarta Express.”
