This monthly(ish) series of YouTube performances was produced and directed in Chicago by Tim Brown and featured Matt Brown in collaboration with his musical colleagues and heroes. The goal was to conjure up a virtual house concert or a memorable jam session at home with friends.
Elise Bergman and Collin Moore have been playing music together for over a decade. In those years, they have written dozens of songs and amassed an impressive repertoire of bluegrass, old-time, early country, and blues. Tasteful guitar flat-picking and a steady bass line and are layered with vocal harmonies so closely entwined that the pair’s voices have been likened to those of kin. Equally at home on a festival stage, in an auditorium hall, accompanying a dance, busking on a sidewalk, passing tunes around a circle, or in an intimate rock club, Big Sadie is an acoustic band with a modern yet timeless approach to American roots music.
Taking place at the Old Town School of Folk Music during its annual Square Roots Festival, the Midwest Fiddle & Banjo Championship promoted the many sounds of fiddle and banjo in the Midwest. It was organized in the spirit of fun and musical conviviality that accompanied two huge fiddle contests held in Chicago nearly 80 years ago. Players from all traditions were welcome: old-time, bluegrass, Norwegian, Scottish, Irish, Cajun, Mexican, Polish, Swedish, etc.
