He grew up in Jackson, Tennesee and now lives in Byhalia, Mississipi. He opened his first Authentic Southern Restaurant in Encinitas, California in 1978. In 1987 he published "Down Home Southern Cooking" with Doubleday Publishing. The Cookbook got great reviews and generated feature stories in the New York Times, USA Today and Bon Appetit.
