Primetime did a piece on 'rent control' and had Aideen Hayden a Labour Party senator and chair of the housing agency Threshold on to discuss the idea with Karl Deeter of Irish Mortgage Brokers.
The idea is a compelling one in many ways, with a narrative that fixing the price will make housing affordable. The academic research doesn't support this, and it is also separate to the true issue which is that of a supply shortage.
This is an interesting debate because it is where economics meets policy and a large complex market (that of housing). We hope our arguments against rent control were sensible, there is some better way of doing it, but the solution being called for by many politicians isn't about fairness, it's about expediency.
