Team UOW Australia and their Illawarra Flame House were announced as the winners of the Solar Decathlon China competition in August 2013. The University of Wollongong and TAFE Illawarra's demonstration of a retrofit of a typical Australian fibro home achieved the highest ever score in the history of the Solar Decathlon competition.
The Illawarra Flame is a net-zero energy, solar powered home, designed and built by UOW and TAFE Illawarra students. The team not only took out first place overall, but also achieved five first place awards, and two second place awards in the individual contests.
The Illawarra Flame will now be rebuilt at the Sustainable Buildings Research Centre (SBRC), where it will be used as a living laboratory and will be regularly opened to the public for tours. Visit http://sbrc.uow.edu.au for details.
