Greenbriar Children's Center is a private non-profit organization established in July, 1949. The mission of the organization is to provide services which lead to the healthy development of children and the strengthening of families. The mission was adopted in 1989. Greenbriar was established as an orphanage for African-American children. Prior to Greenbriar, African-American orphans lived on penal farms. In the mid 1960's, the organization opened its doors to children of all races and expanded services based on community need. The agency serves more than 1,500 children and families each year with services which include the Runaway/Homeless Youth Program, Residential Care, Emergency Shelter, Family Preservation, Project Safe Place, and Early Childhood Education and Care. Greenbriar is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Services for Families and Children (COA), Inc.
