9 million people have left their homes in South Asia for work in the Gulf countries. Women from South Asia make up a large percentage of the 1.7 million female migrant domestic workers in the Gulf. These women choose to leave home for a variety of reasons. GAATW-IS, in partnership with members and colleagues, has held discussions with returnee female migrant domestic workers in India, Bangladesh and Nepal to better understand the processes and outcomes of migration for women. We tried to create a space for women to share their stories with each other and with us. Migration is a complex decision, ripe with exciting opportunities but also with much potential exploitation. There are no simple success and failure stories, but as we listened to the women, patterns emerged, and glaring gaps in policies and practices were revealed. We hope these videos give a sense of the women's realities, and of how much work is to be done.
