UK InfoDay: Horizon 2020 Societal Challenges 2 and 5, 2014 Work Programmes Play

Key information from the UK InfoDay: EU Horizon 2020 Societal Challenges 2 and 5, for potential applicants to the recently launched work programmes under SC 2 "Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry, Marine and Maritime and Inland Water Research and the Bioeconomy" and SC5 "Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials." This event took place on Thursday 23 January 2014, at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, Westminster.

BESTF2 Bioenergy Demonstrator Funding Play

UK funders involved in the BESTF2 joint call for Bioenergy Demonstrator projects explain its aims - to encourage the commercialisation of bioenergy projects and thereby increase renewable energy production across the EU - and how to get involved. BESTF2 funding
will be used to support over 48 million Euro's worth projects that:
-Will deliver a pre-commercial demonstration
- Address one or more of the following seven value chains:
- Synthetic liquid fuels and/or hydrocarbons and blending components via gasification
- Bio-methane and other synthetic gaseous fuels from biomass via gasification
- High-efficiency heat and power generation via gasification of biomass
- Bioenergy carriers via other thermochemical processes (e.g. pyrolysis, torrefaction)
- Ethanol and higher alcohols from ligno-cellulosic feedstock via fermentation
- Renewable hydrocarbons through biological and/or chemical synthesis from biomass containing carbohydrates
- Bioenergy carriers from CO2 and sunlight through microorganism-based production and upgrading into fuels and valuable bio-products;
- Involve active participation of at least two participating member states;
- Are industry-led; and
- Demonstrate value for money and appropriate sources of matched funding.
