Beijing is close to completing construction of a new airport, south of the city's center. The roof and glass at the main terminal building are being installed, which was announced on Monday. The airport is expected to begin trial operations in October 2019.
By 2025 it's expected to handle 72 million passenger trips as well as 620,000 departures and arrivals annually. The new airport is meant to supplement the city's overwhelmed civil aviation services.
The current airport, the Beijing Capital International Airport, became the world's second busiest airport in 2016, but demand exceeded the airport's design capacity. It handled 94.4 million passenger trips last year, though the facility was designed for only 82 million.
