For 15 days, seven adults, seven young people, and six boys and girls from Corn island with auditory disability participated in the first sign language course given in the municipality.
Each participant received the sign language dictionary from the National Association of the Deaf of Nicaragua.
For the majority of those attending it was the first time they received formal instruction in sign language. The course is part of the activities of the USAID Local Municipal Program’s PODER project, implemented by Global Communities in association with FECONORI.
The Program’s objective is to strengthen the capacity of civil society organizations to increase civic participation and influence decision-makers in order to improve local governance and make progress in the development of their territory.
We thank Ms. Perla García for supporting us with the interpretation of the interviews.
