  • Atomic Fundamentals w/ Doug Edwards Play all

Recorded on June 27, 2011 as part of the "Bringing Nuclear into the Classroom" Series. This is the first in a six part series to help teachers understand and teach nuclear science.

"Atomic Fundamentals" addresses the history and discovery of atoms, elements, simple atomic particles, and atomic structure. It discusses and introduces associated concepts critical for the understanding of basic chemistry and one of the focuses of this series, nuclear processes and reactions.  The presentation provides the necessary background for part 3 of the series, "Nuclear Fundamentals.". The presenter is Doug Edwards of Energy Solutions, who provides a bright, light, and entertaining discussion of the topic.

The "Bringing Nuclear into the Classroom" Series is presented by Citizens for Nuclear Technology Awareness (CNTA), the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center (RPSEC at USC-Aiken), the American Nuclear Society - Savannah River (ANS-SR) Section, and Energy Solutions.  To learn more, visit us at www.c-n-t-a.com, www.usca.edu/rpsec, www.energysolutions.com, and www.ans-sr.org.

  • Power Generation Fundamentals - All 4 Parts Play all

All 4 Video Parts - Recorded on June 27, 2011 as part of the "Bringing Nuclear into the Classroom" Series. This is the second in a six part series to help teachers understand and teach nuclear science.

"Power Generation Fundamentals" addresses the basics of how electricity is produced and distributed; the need for different power plants to follow daily load shifts; the energy sources available to generate electricity; their prominence, abundance, benefits, and problems; future growth and long term needs of both domestic and international power; and their impact on the environment.  The presenter is Brad Swanson of Energy Solutions, who provides a knowledgeable and enthusiastic explanation of why this is important for the public to understand and why intelligent and informed decision is needed to optimize society's reward and minimize environmental impact.

  • 'The Neutrino' - All 4 Parts Play all

All 4 Parts of SRS Heritage Foundation's/ANS-SR's "The Neutrino"

"The Neutrino": A one hour long original recording with excellent content given by Dr. Clyde Cowan concerning the motivation, prior efforts (including plans to use a fission bomb) and the actual experiment itself that first detected and proved the existence of the almost unmeasurable neutrino particle. This is a transcription of a video tape of a lecture given to an undergraduate physics course at the US Naval Academy. Some technical terminology appropriate in an introductory college physics course is used; despite this, Dr. Cowan provides a bright, insightful discussion that can be generally understood by the layman.
