Flow is the first album of Tom Becks. It was released on the 14th of July 2017.
After a long journey filled with ups-and-downs, hard work and most of all a lot of musical creativity I am proud to present you “Flow”, my first ever album. Flow contains 11 tracks in a wide variety of genres – some of which I don’t even know the name of. This is the story behind Flow.
I am a college student in Delft and am a member of a fraternity. Our yearly fraternity-anthem has been produced by me for 4 years in a row and I have achieved the reputation of being the resident producer. Every year my fraternity hosts a festival called Aangeschoten Wild (AW) which roughly translates to “Tipsy Wildlife”. The festival lasts one day and is both music and culture oriented. It is a place to help upcoming artists grow. One day when AW was only a month away a friend of mine asked me why I hadn’t performed on the festival yet in all these years. This was the moment everything was set in motion.
I have, like any other producer, tons of unfinished tracks just lying around. A few in particular kind of fit the same genre and vibe but I never had a good reason to finish them even though they were on my “you just HAVE to finish these one day”-list. The question that Laurens asked me instantly triggered the idea to grab these old tracks and transform them into a live performance. I had never performed live before but I always believe that if you truly want something that you can achieve it - so I got to work. I communicated with the organization and managed to get myself a timeslot on the mainstage of the festival. I had finally found a reason to finish all those old tracks after all these years.
I re-opened the old projects and planned out a continuous set. I produced 3 extra tracks, mainly to connect the different parts of the set that differed too much in style. Working against the clock I managed to kind of finish 13 tracks and to construct a 30-minute musical journey. I had never finished a track in this genre before. All my previous releases were house of some sort, as were the fraternity anthems. The performance was a huge success. People were very enthusiastic about it, especially about the new style that I showed them. A new Tom Becks was born. That moment on the mainstage that I was playing live and that the entire crowd loved what I was doing changed my perception on music. Seeing everyone just lose themselves in my music, completely surrendering to things I had created made me feel alive like never before. This is what I want to do.
Ever since I was 11 years old I have been making music. For years I have struggled with finishing tracks and accepting their imperfections as they are. I am a huge perfectionist so showing a track to the world without it being EXACTLY the way I want it to be has always been a challenge for me. The fact that I suddenly had 11 almost-finished tracks lying around made me set a goal: to finish them all and drop an album, identifying a style which just feels right to me. One of the tracks got scrapped because I just don’t think it’s good enough. Another one is mostly orchestral and I am going to redo that entire track with the orchestral libraries I have just bought – so look forward to some goodies!
