I am filming Aviv's 32nd Birthday Shit as a comedy special - I call it a birthday special. I did my first one last year - Aviv's 31st Birthday Shit. I feel like it's a good investment for a number of reasons. I believe the creative exercise involved in making a special is underrated. I feel like investing in a birthday special each year will better prepare me for my first one-man special when it's time. As comics, the "painting" we leave behind is the comedy special - and much like how successful musicians push themselves to release singles/albums/music videos regularly, we should push ourselves to release comedy specials regularly (which is what top professional comics like Louis C.K. do) - at least that's how I see it. A "birthday special" - as opposed to the traditional one-man special - doesn't necessarily require me to have a solid one-hour set ready - there's something more loose, open, and fun about the idea of a birthday special. It allows me to experiment and play with the medium and do things that otherwise would not work with a one-man special - and of course, share the stage with other comics - which not only strengthens my friendship with other comics but also frees me from the burden of doing everything alone. Most importantly, I feel like the birthday special allows me to introduce myself to the world much sooner and in a funnier, more magical way than a one-man special - not to mention, a more original way that I think stands out!

The 32nd is the child within. The 31st is the ego. The child within is a big theme in the second birthday special - celebrating his birthday like his favourite holiday - Halloween - his childhood dream of being a mad scientist/wizard/sorcerer - wearing a child's birthday hat - the excessive party accessories - talking with a party squawker, etc. Ego can also be very funny - his overinflated self-image - unaware of his own shortcomings - overconfident but makes tons of mistakes - and full of contradictions and ironies. He introduces himself with a self-important self-given name but struggles to spell it out. He tells his friend to shut up. He refuses to be corrected ("No, you'll miss out on a lotta shit!") He makes a big deal of himself but then goes to catch a ride on a scooter - and as if that's not ironic enough, he crashes it. He doesn't show any awareness of the seriousness of what happened ("Sorry about the coffee. I'll get you a new one.") Ego is a strong theme in the first birthday special. The Harry Potter/Pooter references ("the chosen one"), the framed signature, the Jesus references, the drummer who is told what to do, and the countdown towards the end, celebrating his birthday like it's New Year's - but at the same time messes everything up, loses the audience, and is still a virgin!
