2 B Bop Hard

Be Free, Bop Hard.

8/6/2014 Jazz fans raged this week on Twitter and YouTube over a failed fake New Yorker Magazine satire: "Sonny Rollins - In My Own Words". The Real Sonny Rollins responded in a live stream interview on 8/4/2014. Will post links soon.

First, The New Yorker should know the difference between insult and true creative satire. Their editors were asleep at the wheel on this. The piece was an insult to Sonny, the history of Jazz, all Jazz Musicians, students of Jazz and Jazz Fans world wide. It wasn't satire, it wasn't funny. It was twisted vicious insult. There was no reason for any Jazz Fan to show a fake sense of humor in response to it.

It sparked an intense reaction from the digital Jazz World. And, I enjoyed seeing World Wide Jazzerati rally to defend Sonny and their passion for Jazz.

With YouTube, Pandora, Twitter, Spotify, Songza, iTunes; I've discovered that the digital Jazz Universe is thriving and expanding. The ashes of this controversy got sucked into a black hole of incompetence. The New Yorker and The Onion got their Jazz bigotry called out, refuted and transformed into a rallying cry to Free Jazz from tyranny. Be Free, Bop Hard.

Let's take a moment to show The Real Sonny Rollins some love by listening to him play the pieces that built his reputation. Please forward any recommendations for music that I should add to this collection.

Bebop, Hard Bop, Free Bop, Post Bop, Next Bop, Live Bop is the best Bop. Spread these Jazz Jamz generously on toast, savor with a dark brew. When the Jam and Joe are done, press auto pilot, light the toro, sip your finest, "straight - no chaser" :D

Experienced pilots can customize the settings for optimum speed, performance and handling. Newbies need to buckle-up and stand by for take-off. Your PHD in the key of blue will come at you like a Matrix up-link from live, improvised conversations between the greatest musicians of all time.

Postscripts

2/27/13. Happy Birthday Dexter Gordon! Long Tall Dex would've been 90 today. We'll start with his ground breaking work with Donald Byrd on Tanya. Byrd died Feb 4 this year at 80. Kurt Elling's Tanya Jean, a Vocalese tribute to their great work is amazing.
