On November 14, 2014, Dr. Hassan Diab was extradited from Canada to France based on deeply flawed handwriting analysis that compared his handwriting to five words written on a hotel registration card in 1980. The evidence was described by the Canadian extradition judge as “convoluted, very confusing, with conclusions that are suspect”, but the judge stated that he felt obliged under Canada’s extradition law to commit Hassan for extradition. This is despite the fact that Hassan's palm prints and finger prints do not match those of the suspect. Hassan’s Canadian lawyer stated: “We now have the classic recipe for the wrongful conviction of a Canadian citizen". There is a real concern that France's anti-terrorism laws and the use of secret intelligence will be used unjustly against Dr. Diab. Making an innocent man pay for a crime he did not commit will only further the tragedy.
