Positive Signs

‘Positive signs’ are a suite of short films offering unique insight into Deaf community especially BSL (British Sign Language) users. The main theme of the film is to maintain positive well being for Deaf people.

Research found that Deaf people are four times more likely to develop mental health problems than the general population. Loneliness and isolation are the norm for many Deaf BSL users.

Being a Deaf individual in an auditory dominated environment can pose many challenges. One of the main challenges is being denied a fair access to healthcare including mental health care is unfortunately common practice for many within the Deaf Community.

This suite of short films is one of the prevention measures with the aim to improve access for Deaf people. This also supports improvement of their self-management maintaining and preserving their own mental health. This suite of films highlights to health staff how to improve their awareness of the particular needs of Deaf people and the culture they inhabit.
