Men Loving Men - Mitch Walker

On the Road to a Gay-Centered Psychology, Part I: The Genesis and Significance of Men Loving Men (1977) A Conversation with the Author, Dr. Mitch Walker - Saturday, October 1, 2011

As Mitch Walker struggled in young adulthood to come out of the closet as homosexual, he also became increasingly interested in combining his long-time interest in psychology with his growing gay sensibility, and one of the first results was Men Loving Men: A Gay Sex Guide and Consciousness Book, which appeared in early 1977. More than being the first full-length work published by that particular press, Gay Sunshine Books, or merely being a gay version of then-available heterosexual "sex guides" (as the "Introduction" explains), Men Loving Men is notable historically because of its concern with nurturing a transformative procreative possibility in terms of what would later be called being "gay-affirmative," an attitude which continued to develop more intensively in the author himself, who then produced a subsequent book, Visionary Love, which concerns a "gay-centered" standpoint of further appreciative refinement.

In this talk, Mitch discussed the historical and situational context which led to Men Loving Men, how that book tried to approach the question of affirmative sensibility at that time, and why the discussion therein wound up pointing toward the more focused standpoint found in Visionary Love, which was the following month's topic. Mitch also read from the book, and answered questions from the audience.
