The Lectureship Committee of the Department of Psychology organized a one-day event (November 10, 2014 - UC Berkeley campus) to honor the legacy of Edward Tolman, as a citizen and as a scientist. This conference coincides with the anniversary events of the Free Speech Movement. Tolman fought his way through two mazes in his lifetime: first, the legal maze through the courts to protect the academic freedom of faculty at Berkeley. Second, and better known, is his pursuit of spatial representation of mazes in the laboratory rat, culminating in the concept of the cognitive map.
