Early in the 19th century, the need was recognised for a railway through the picturesque Semmering area, nicknamed "Zauberberg". Until then people had to cross this area by foot or stage-coach. Building the railway cost over a thousand lives, mainly deaths from typhoid and cholera.
The daredevils of the mountain railway pioneers have built 16 viaducts, 15 tunnels, 129 bridges and 142 special structures.
The old Semmering became a resort with hotels and villas. The railway made it possible for hundreds of people at a time to visit the resort.
The Semmering Railway or Ghega line follows a beautiful route through the Austrian Alps. Built between 1848 and 1854, the railway represented a triumph of civil engineering for the time. Officially designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, this site is to be safeguarded for the future as a testimony to its enduring past.
