Power Metal

Power Metal is a generally up-beat metal genre consisting of fast guitar hooks and catchy tunes, often associated with neo-classical metal and progressive metal, and occasionally glam metal.

The first influences of power metal appeared in the late 70's and early 80's when Ronnie James Dio was singing in Rainbow, the Rainbow song Stargazer is often named as the first power metal song. The first bands playing primitive forms of power metal, like Virgin Steele, did not achieve a breakthrough for the genre (though this band is still active today.) The big breakthrough of power metal came from the band Helloween when they released the two 'Keeper of the Seven Keys' albums, the same time saw the rise of Blind Guardian and Stratovarius. These three bands laid the fundamentals of power metal like it is still known today.
