HIV/AIDS: A Workplace Issue

AIDS is a workplace issue because it has a marked impact on workers, their families, enterprises and national economies. HIV-related stigma and discrimination threaten the fundamental rights at work and undermine efforts to provide prevention, treatment, care and support. The workplace has a vital role to play in the response to limit the spread and effects of the pandemic. The ILO Recommendation concerning HIV and AIDS and the World of Work (No. 200) is the first international labour standard focused on the protection of human rights at work. The ILO Recommendation calls for integration of world of work into the AIDS and development response and lays down principles for action through the involvement of governments, employers' and workers' oranizations as well as people living with HIV.
