Crowds, crashes and coastline as the Tour de France rolls on

The fifth stage of the 2012 Tour de France rolling into action on Thursday morning from the city of Rouen, the historic capital of Normandy. The route stretches for 196.5 km, taking in the scenic French coastline, before ending the day in Saint-Quentin. It has been a dramatic few days of racing, with tens of thousands lining the route, and a series of serious crashes that have left many of the field badly bruised. These crashes have been especially worrying for riders who will participate in the Olympics next month, such as Britain's Mark Cavendish. Fabian Cancellara remains in the lead, and is the only player to wear the yellow jersey since the first stage of the race. Bradley Wiggins of the UK trails Cancellara followed by Sylvain Chavanel of France in 3rd.
