The Adventure Playground at Libertas School of Memphis
CONCEPTS & THEMES
A tone poem countering the systematic criminalization of black children. The playground is a space to re-engage with the environment in a way kids are slipping away from. This work captures the humanity of our children and evokes desire to protect their innocence in an idyllic return to childhood. The playground is a green project built with sustainable materials from blighted areas throughout North Memphis.
The Adventure Playground is a place where friends can explore, discover, play, and wonder with other friends. By incorporating natural items and keeping them nondescript, Friends can imagine any situation they desire. Buildings could be forts, restaurants, or a doctor's office. The log bridge could be over a river or lava flow.

ADDITIONAL PLAYGROUND SPECS
90% of the wood used is from pallets or torn down fences. 100% of the 60 tires were salvaged from Frayser and North Memphis. The cost of the playground has been approximately $3000. By comparison, another playground with such features would cost about $15,000, 5 times as much.
