In the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in American History, which specifically targeted the LGBT and Latino Communities, I weep.
It is without fear that I say I am proud.
On a day, just one day, when so many have been taken.
At a time when no one seems to care why, only who.
After months of national dialogue,
Mired in not so thinly vailed hatred.
After countless threats to my own life,
Hashtags will not bring them back.
I am not surprised that so many were taken.
Going through the motions is a simple matter of routine,
It wasn’t us, we didn’t do this. #NotAllMen
But, they say, BUT!!
Don’t blame the culture, for this ISOLATED INCIDENT.
Don’t blame the culture for the actions of one man.
HE was a man.
HE…. Yes HE, had a gun.
And HE…. Was not an isolated incident.
He is an expression of our culture, of our combined intent to silence and destroy.
Of our unwillingness to act, and of our acceptance that vigils are the new norm.
It is without fear… WITHOUT FEAR… that I am proud.
That I am LGBT.
A statement I may die for.
A Fact that is no longer deniable. That never should have been denied.
It is with a heavy heart,
It is without shame,
It is for every taken soul, and for those who are yet to be taken.
That I weep.
