<media:description>WIPO Director General Daren Tang welcomes France's ratification of the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications. France is among the Lisbon Agreement’s oldest members and main users of the Lisbon System, with over 500 registrations. The Lisbon System, which covers 53 countries, provides protection for names that identify the geographic origin of products such as coffee, tea, fruits, cheese, wine, pottery, glass and cloth.

Ambassador François Rivasseau, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, deposited the instrument of ratification on January 21, 2021. The Geneva Act of WIPO's Lisbon Agreement will enter into force for France on April 21, 2021: https://www.wipo.int/lisbon/en/news/2021/news_0002.html

<media:description>A brief introduction to WIPO’s Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). The PCT makes it easier to seek patent protection for inventions in multiple countries.

Advantages of using the PCT for international patent protection include valuable information on your invention’s patentability, additional time to evaluate where to seek patent protection, and postponement of national filing, translation and attorney fees.

<media:description>WIPO’s new Director General Daren Tang holds his first Geneva press conference since assuming leadership of the Organization. The press conference opens with a few introductory remarks by the Director General followed by a presentation of the results of the World IP Indicators Report (WIPI) 2020 report by Chief Economist Carsten Fink.

Published on December 7, 2020, the WIPI finds that worldwide trademark and industrial design-creation activity rose in 2019 while the number of global patent applications dipped slightly on weaker demand in intellectual property powerhouse China.

<media:description>WIPO’s Madrid System allows you to restrict the list of goods and services of an international trademark registration in three different ways: limitations, renunciations and cancellations.

In this tutorial covering limitations, you will learn how to restrict the list of goods and services for some or all of the designated Contracting Parties (countries/regions) in your international trademark registration. The restricted goods and services will remain in the main list of the international registration, but those impacted by the limitation will no longer apply in the countries/regions concerned.

More about limitations: https://www.wipo.int/madrid/en/how_to/manage/limitation.html

1:13 Types of restrictions
2:58 How to request a limitation

About WIPO PROOF

WIPO PROOF is a global, online service that rapidly generates tamper-proof evidence proving your intellectual asset existed at a specific point in time, and that it has not been altered since then. The service creates a WIPO PROOF token – a date and time-stamped digital fingerprint of your intellectual asset, which can be used as evidence in the context of legal disputes.

About the Global Innovation Index

WIPO’s Global Innovation Index 2020 ranks the innovation performance of 131 countries and economies around the world. Under the “Who Will Finance Innovation” theme, this year’s edition looks into a long-held business and policy concern: How to boost innovation-driven entrepreneurship and social, cultural and economic growth. The GII 2020 also investigates the pressing need for new methods of innovation funding in a post-COVID world.

<media:description>WIPO Director General Daren Tang welcomes Saudi Arabia’s accession to two WIPO treaties - the Strasbourg Agreement Concerning the International Patent Classification and the Budapest Treaty on the International Recognition of the Deposit of Microorganisms for the Purposes of Patent Procedure. The Strasbourg Treaty establishes the International Patent Classification and is key for the retrieval of patent documents in the search for prior art. The Budapest Treaty is significant for biotechnology research internationally.

Ambassador Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Al-Wasel, Saudi Arabia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, says this was an important step in the Kindgom’s efforts to strengthen his country’s IP framework.
