<media:description>CST Conference 2022 Keynote: Rowan Aust, University of Huddersfield and Share My Telly Job

Dr Rowan Aust, University of Huddersfield, speaks about her work at Share My Telly Job which aims to counteract the implicit discriminatory practices of the film and television industries.

She discusses how long working hours and a culture of class, sex, able-bodied and race privilege make the industry's others feel in order to emphasise that EDI policies need to be built around a culture of care and take into account the emotional component of working in such an industry.

Introduced by Prof Jo Crotty, Director of the Institute for Social Responsibility (ISR) and Director of Knowledge Exchange at Edge Hill University.

<media:description>CST Conference 2022 Panel 1: The Outliers of Lifestyle and Reality TV

The three panelists, Abigail Jenkins from the University of Glasgow, Alkim Kutlu from Heinrich Heine University in Duesseldorf and Zoe Shacklock from the University of St. Andrews, bring their nuanced views to lifestyle and reality TV.

All three of them, though focused on different kinds of reality television, emphasise positive shifts in the genre, but also highlight the continued focus on ideologies that can be understood as problematic:

[00:01:44] Abigail Jenkins, University of Glasgow
Abigail discusses reboots of wellness programmes and shows that although presenters may have become nicer, the transformation narrative continues to emphasise a hegemonic understanding of what success looks like.

[00:22:41] Alkim Kutlu, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf
Alkim examines food television that has changed to incorporate issues of social justice in the United States - as long as it manages to stay overall patriotic.

[00:45:06] Dr Zoe Shacklock, University of St Andrews
Zoe presents a rare critical voice on The Repair Shop, which she highlights presents narratives that are largely ableist.

[01:05:27] The discussion session was chaired by Dr Elke Weissmann, co-organiser of the CST Conference, Reader in Film and Television, and member of the Television Studies Research Group at Edge Hill University.

<media:description>CST Conference 2022 Panel 2: Traditional TV and Online Television

In this panel, the speakers looked at how traditional television providers are challenged and need to negotiate to find a place in the new multiplatform market.

[00:00:12]Swati Bute from Jagran Lakecity University, India looks at how OTT providers have brought about changes in the genres available to audiences in India. She notices the significant differences between traditional Indian television which is heavily focused on romance and melodrama while the OTT providers offer more crime- and thriller-based narratives.

[00:24:11] Cathrin Bengesser from Aarhus University in Denmark compares the local niche streaming markets in Europe. She finds that some markets with high streaming uptake are dominated by the big multinational companies such as Amazon Prime and Netflix, while in others local providers are more successful. Why is that? The answer to this question is part of her paper.

[00:55:34] Q&amp;A

Introduced by Dr Elke Weissmann, co-organiser of the CST Conference, Reader in Film and Television, and member of the Television Studies Research Group at Edge Hill University.

<media:description>CST Conference 2022 Panel 3: Streaming and the TV Text

In this panel, Kim Hebben from Technische Universitaet Dortmund and Max Dosser from the University of Pitsburgh examine aspects of television history that we do not talk about often when we talk about television.

[00:01:45] Max Dosser examined the role of the title sequence and convincingly, but perhaps controversially argued that the title sequence has become ever more important in the age of streaming to communicate key values of the television text.

[00:21:13] Kim Hebben, focusing on the development of VR technology connected to television, emphasised that rather than examining television history in relation to eras and milestones, we are able to see the continuities of television as a medium in constant recalibration.

Both papers made visible the importance to look beyond the narrative confines of television to see the full complexity that is television.

[00:41:40] The discussion session was chaired by Brett Mills, Edge Hill University.

<media:description>CST Conference 2022 Roundtable 4: When Philosophy Invented TV Studies

The closing round table was organised in response to an Open Philosophy special issue that was focused on television with an introduction called 'Taking Television Seriously'.

As so often, we found that too many of the articles did not engage with any reading from TV Studies, prompting questions about why our scholarships remains so invisible to those outside our discipline even when they engage with our subject area.

In this panel, chaired by Brett Mills from Edge Hill University, Christine Geraghty, Josette Wolthuis, Rachel Moseley, Kim Akass and Amy Holdsworth discussed their responses and considered ways forward.

CST Conference 2022 Roundtable 1: The TV Dictionary

This roundtable introduced the TV Dictionary Project initiated by Ariel Avissar.

The TV Dictionary is a growing collection of video essays, largely focused on specific TV programmes that examine the TV programmes through the lens of a single word and its dictionary definitions.

The outcomes are thought-provoking video essays that not just give insight into what the programmes might mean, but also into the layered and essentially collaborative project that is knowledge creation in which popular culture sits side by side with other, and perhaps 'higher' cultural artifacts.

In the roundtable, we hear from:
[00:04:20] Libertad Gills
[00:11:06] Catherine Grant
[00:17:03] Evelyn Kreutzer - her response can be viewed here: https://vimeo.com/725269356
[00:17:28] Johannes Binotto
[00:23:22] Ariel Avissar
[00:26:56] Jason Mittell, who responded with his own video essay.
