Community Health Assistants in Liberia: A Success Story
Liberia was one of the hardest-hit countries by the Ebola outbreak in 2014-2015, which exposed the gaps and weaknesses in its health system. To address this challenge, the Liberian government, with the support of UNICEF and other partners, launched a national community health program that trained and deployed thousands of community health assistants across the country. These community health workers provide essential health services and disease surveillance to remote and underserved communities, saving lives and preventing future epidemics. The program is a remarkable example of how policy entrepreneurs, evidence, and political will can transform a health system and improve the well-being of millions of people.

In this video, you will learn about the Child Friendly Communities initiative, a UNICEF-led program that aims to strengthen primary health care interventions for children in Liberia. You will see how UNICEF, in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has designed a real-time data collection system for community health workers, which has improved their digital literacy and enhanced their service delivery. You will also discover how this initiative is part of a larger regional effort to create an integrated approach to address the multiple challenges facing children in West and Central Africa. This approach involves routine, evidence-based program monitoring, as well as social accountability and community engagement mechanisms, which provide real-time information to guide local decision-making and action. Watch this video to find out how UNICEF is empowering communities and improving child health in Liberia.

Breastfeeding gives children the healthiest start to life. That’s why we recommend:

🕐 Starting within one hour of birth.

👶🏻 Breastfeeding exclusively without food or water for the first six months.

💪🏽 Continuing together with solid foods for two years or more.

UNICEF, in collaboration with the Government of Liberia, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other partners, launched the Peacebuilding, Education and Advocacy (PBEA) programme in 2012. It was implemented by the Government of Liberia (MoE, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS), the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Peacebuilding Office (MIA-PBO) and international NGO partners. Despite the epidemic challenge, the PBEA program was able to achieve the following:

Increased access to quality education for 2,798 children and adolescents.

Enhanced capacity of 126 ECD, ALP and ABE teachers and caregivers to deliver conflict-sensitive education services.

Improved learning environments that provided teaching and learning materials and renovated classrooms for 5,646 children and adolescents from ECD through to Grade 12.

Increased Ebola community awareness, prevention and control campaigns in the counties through training and deployment of 15,288 teachers, principals, community members and national volunteers.

Messaging of schools reopening and related safety cautions through the Come to School National Emergency Education Radio Programme across Monrovia, reaching approximatively 32 per cent of the school-age population.

Development, in collaboration with the MoE and other education-sector partners, of the Schools Reopening Protocols, which defined in detail the responsibilities of students, teachers, parents, communities and education administrators in ensuring a safe, Ebola-free school environment.
