Cut grass lies frail:
Brief is the breath
Mown stalks exhale.
Long, long the death

It dies in the white hours
Of young-leafed June
With chestnut flowers,
With hedges snowlike strewn,

White lilac bowed,
Lost lanes of Queen Anne's lace,
And that high-builded cloud
Moving at summer's pace.

When the wind
turns and asks, in my father’s voice,
Have you prayed?

I know three things. One:
I’m never finished answering to the dead.

Two: A man is four winds and three fires.
And the four winds are his father’s voice,
his mother’s voice . . .

Or maybe he’s seven winds and ten fires.
And the fires are seeing, hearing, touching,
dreaming, thinking . . .
Or is he the breath of God?

When the wind turns traveler
and asks, in my father’s voice, Have you prayed?
I remember three things.
One: A father’s love

is milk and sugar,
two-thirds worry, two-thirds grief, and what’s left over

is trimmed and leavened to make the bread
the dead and the living share.

And patience? That’s to endure
the terrible leavening and kneading.

And wisdom? That’s my father’s face in sleep.

When the wind
asks, Have you prayed?
I know it’s only me

reminding myself
a flower is one station between
earth’s wish and earth’s rapture, and blood

was fire, salt, and breath long before
it quickened any wand or branch, any limb
that woke speaking. It’s just me

in the gowns of the wind,
or my father through me, asking,
Have you found your refuge yet?
asking, Are you happy?

Strange. A troubled father. A happy son.
The wind with a voice. And me talking to no one.

The sunlight on the garden
Hardens and grows cold,
We cannot cage the minute
Within its nets of gold,
When all is told
We cannot beg for pardon.

Our freedom as free lances
Advances towards its end;
The earth compels, upon it
Sonnets and birds descend;
And soon, my friend,
We shall have no time for dances.

The sky was good for flying
Defying the church bells
And every evil iron
Siren and what it tells:
The earth compels,
We are dying, Egypt, dying

And not expecting pardon,
Hardened in heart anew,
But glad to have sat under
Thunder and rain with you,
And grateful too
For sunlight on the garden.

Ah, the Grand Ol' Ruby Shell, or GORS. She is truly a beaut. Majestic. Inquisitive. Like an eagle about to be caught by a fly fisher man.

Anyway, in this video, I show you how to start the GORS, or IRB, the Interactive Ruby Shell to everyone but me.

What is the IRB, you may ask? It's many things to many people. To some it's just a voice in the breeze to other's it's a daily companion to even others it's a screeching old harlot. But to you, my friend, to you?

To you, it's a place of magic. The starting point for all your programming adventures. This is how it begins.

This is one part of a series of interviews with philosophers, writers, scientist and other kinds of intellectuals about the relationship between beauty and consolation. In this part, part 23, the famous American pragmatist philosopher Richard Rorty is being interviewed.

Currently 09/06/06 only part 23 is available by DVD rip. Most of the other parts are forthcoming and will only be available in VHS rip. This is because I've recently bought the VHS box of this series, unfortunately not all videotapes were available anymore. Because I really wanted to have the interview with Richard Rorty, one of the parts which isn’t available in the VHS box, I ordered a manual made copy by the VPRO (the Dutch broadcasting company which made the series ‘Of Beauty and Consolation’) and the VPRO just put it on a blank DVD.

I don’t know exactly when I’m going to release the other parts, but if you are interested you can let me know at pieterkeesdejong [at] gmail.com, the knowledge that more people are interested may speed up the process.

Most of the interviews are being conducted in English. Because they were only meant for Dutch audience, but by this release I would like to share it with the entire world, all the in English conducted interviews are subtitled in Dutch. On al VHS versions and also on this DVD version of the interview the Dutch subtitles are hard coded so I can’t get rid of them, but most of the interviews are in English so that shouldn’t be much of a problem. If a specific interview is conducted in Dutch I may make subtitles for them myself, but only if there are enough people interested.

Note for this specific release of part 23: Unfortunately the video shakes a bit, this was also a problem on the original DVD I received from the VPRO. This shouldn't be the problem with the forthcoming VHS releases.
