The Office of Global Insight and Policy is leading a two-year project to better understand how Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems can protect, provide for, and empower children. Children are already interacting with AI technologies in many different ways through toys, video games, and learning software. However, little attention is paid to how AI systems will affect children and their rights.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a huge part of children's lives and it's only going to get bigger. However, despite its enormous impact on children's lives and futures, little attention is paid to how AI is meeting children's needs or affecting their rights. What is UNICEF doing about this? Watch the video.

Responsible data use can benefit children but ensuring children are protected, empowered and granted control of their data is a serious concern. That's why UNICEF has launched a Manifesto – a set of 10 demands to protect children and data.

This webinar builds upon the Manifesto and unpacks what it means for children’s data in Asia and Africa. How should Asian and African countries be revising their data protection laws and what standards should they be following? What should companies operating in Asia and Africa be doing to ensure they are protecting children’s data to the highest standards, regardless of national law?

UNICEF hosted a launch webinar on children’s data governance 22 June 2021. To help governments and partners design policies that meet this standard, the Office of Global Insight and Policy invited 17 global experts to work with us over the past year.

Together, UNICEF and the experts examined the biggest opportunities and risks faced by children in the modern data economy, the weaknesses in existing approaches to data governance, and the trade-offs and gray areas with which any policy must grapple. The result: a proposal for a new model of governance for child data – a Manifesto – that is fitting for the 21st century.

You can access the Manifesto here: bit.ly/unicefdatamanifesto .

Watch the webinar with the distinguished guest speakers and moderator.
