This month we were joined by Dr Ray Dorsey. Dr. Ray Dorsey is a neurologist, researcher, and public health advocate working to end Parkinson's disease by addressing its root causes: toxic environmental exposures. He is the co-author of The Parkinson's Plan (2025) and Ending Parkinson's Disease (2020), and serves as a Professor of Neurology at the University of Rochester. One of the world’s most widely read, cited, and followed neurologists, Dr. Dorsey has spent his career exposing the environmental drivers of neurological disease - and advancing a vision for a future where conditions like Parkinson’s are rare, not inevitable. The White House recognized him as a “Champion for Change” for his groundbreaking work on Parkinson’s disease. He has testified before Congress, advised the World Health Organization, and leads pioneering research at the intersection of environment and neurodegeneration. His work highlights the growing evidence behind the Parkinson's pandemic, linking the disease to chemicals commonly found in our environment from dry cleaning facilities to golf courses. Dr. Dorsey is also the founding director of the Center for the Brain & Environment at Atria Health and Research Institute, where he is working to uncover and eliminate the environmental contributors to Parkinson's, ALS, Alzheimer's, autism, cancer and other chronic diseases. He co-authored the best selling book "Ending Parkinson's Disease" in 2020 and he co-authored the new book, "The Parkinson's Plan - A New Path to Prevention and Treatment. The Parkinson's Plan book has earned over 65 endorsements across advocacy, medicine, research, environmental health, public policy, and beyond.

This month we had as our guest speaker, Tim Meakem from the Focused Ultrasound Foundation. Tim has an extensive background on behalf of advancing this non-invasive option for patients. With his physician experience, medical device industry background and knowledge of the clinical research process, he is able to speak authoritatively on this topic.
Focused ultrasound uses ultrasonic energy guided by real-time imaging to treat tissue deep in the body without incisions or radiation. Multiple intersecting beams of ultrasound are directed and concentrated on a target; much like a magnifying glass can focus multiple beams of light on a single point. Where each individual beam passes through the tissue, there is no effect. But, at the focal point, the convergence of the beams of focused ultrasound energy results in many important biological effects depending on the nature of the tissue and the ultrasound parameters.

Dave Iverson was a broadcast journalist who’d recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s when he decided to do something he’d never quite imagined: He moved in to take care of his 95-year-old mom. Winter Stars is the story of their decade-long caregiving odyssey, which lasted until Adelaide Iverson’s death at the age of 105. It’s a book Michael J. Fox calls “a modern classic … documenting the uncertain journey into the country of caregiving and the deeply sustaining bonds of familial love.”

This month we had the privelege of having Jill Grinnell from Golden Girls as our guest speaker. Starting the process of finding a safe and individually fitting senior living community based on care needs, finances, environment, location, and preferences can feel overwhelming - don’t do it alone! Jill Grinnell has over 30 years of experience working with seniors and their families. She started her career after graduating from Mt. Mary University with a degree in Business Communications and Marketing with an emphasis in Gerontology. Jill’s first job in the Senior Care industry was as a Marketing and Activities Director at residential care homes. From there she fell in love with the concept of having care, compassion, socialization and security under one roof for seniors that otherwise would be alone or in long-term care. From there she explored other opportunities and had a variety of roles through the years as Executive Director, Memory Care Director, Life Enrichment Specialist, and Regional Director of Sales and Marketing. What has always mattered most to her has been her connection with seniors and their families while making a difference in their lives. As a Certified Dementia Practitioner, her most recent venture was opening a Montessori-based Adult Day Center that grouped individuals based on their cognitive abilities and provided a secure environment throughout the day along with meaningful programming. Jill also is a support group facilitator for the Alzheimer’s Association, Mild Cognitive Impairment Groups, and Caregiver Support Groups

This month we had Dr. Peter Tass as our guest speaker. He gave an excellent presentation and stayed to answer our support groups many questions. Dr Tass investigates and develops neuromodulation techniques for understanding and treating neurologic conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, dysfunction following stroke and tinnitus. He creates invasive and non-invasive therapeutic procedures by means of comprehensive computational neuroscience studies and advanced data analysis techniques. The computational neuroscience studies guide experiments that use clinical electrophysiology measures, such as high density EEG recordings and MRI imaging, and various outcome measures. He has pioneered a neuromodulation approach based on thorough computational modelling that employs dynamic self-organization, plasticity and other neuromodulation principles to produce sustained effects after stimulation. To investigate stimulation effects and disease-related brain activity, he focuses on the development of stimulation methods that cause a sustained neural desynchronization by an unlearning of abnormal synaptic interactions. He also performs and contributes to pre-clinical and clinical research in related areas.

This month we had the privilege of a visit from our special guest Danielle Frain, PT. DPT. As a physical therapist, she discussed her specialization in neurological conditions and the importance of neuroplasticity in treating patients with various diagnoses. She stressed the need for early intervention in Parkinson's disease, focusing on fall prevention and the benefits of exercise. Danielle also highlighted the role of total body wellness, including factors like sleep, nutrition, and social health on physical ability to move. She emphasized the importance of seeing a physical therapist every six months for an assessment, followed by a community-based wellness program.

This month we had the privilege of a visit from our special guest Kanwar S. Bhutani. He was one of the first people in the world to get access to the special vibratory gloves developed by Dr Peter Tass at Stanford University. He tells us of his personal PD journey, how he got to use these amazing gloves and the incredible impact that they’ve had on improving the quality of his life. It's a very inspirational interview for a very promising treatment that hopefully will get FDA approval sooner rather than later
