Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to address some of the biggest challenges in education and lifelong learning today, innovate teaching and learning practices, and accelerate progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 4. Yet, while AI brings new opportunities, it also raises significant ethical, social, and pedagogical concerns. Current policies and discussions often adopt a narrow, tool-driven view of AI, overlooking broader issues of inclusion, empowerment, and agency.

To truly harness the potential of AI in education, a human-centred and inclusive approach is essential—one that reflects UNESCO’s global commitment to equity, lifelong learning, and the responsible use of technology. It aims to shift the conversation to include AI’s role in addressing current inequalities regarding access to knowledge, research and the diversity of cultural expressions and to ensure AI does not widen the technological divides within and between countries. The promise of 'AI for all' must be that everyone can take advantage of the technological revolution underway and access its benefits such as innovation and knowledge. To harness AI’s potential responsibly, there is a need for holistic, ethical frameworks that support inclusive and sustainable lifelong learning.

To realise this transformative and emancipatory power of lifelong learning, the Marrakech Framework for Action calls for effective policies and instruments that bridge the digital divide, increase access, address online power relations and prevent the abuse of technologies, such as AI. The MFA also emphasises the critical role adult educators play in facilitating learning by strengthening their digital competencies to support inclusive learning. Additionally, addressing the digital divide for older adults is essential to ensure that lifelong learning opportunities are accessible to all, regardless of age or region.

During this webinar, we launched the new online course Digital Empowerment for Adult Educators in the Age of AI and Other Emerging Technologies. This course is designed to empower adult educators around the world to effectively and responsibly integrate AI into their teaching.

Objectives
Explore current trends in policy, research, and practice related to artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in adult learning and education, with particular focus on their implications for lifelong learning and educator agency.

Examine how digital empowerment and responsible AI use can enhance inclusive and equitable adult education, including ethical considerations, critical thinking, and informed digital citizenship.

Highlight innovative andragogical strategies and research-driven approaches for integrating generative AI, media and information literacy, and immersive technologies, assistive technologies and Universal Design for Learning in adult learning settings.

Engage educators and stakeholders through interactive discussion and a guided preview of the new self-learning course, fostering practical insights and reflection.

Launch the online course Digital Empowerment for Adult Educators in the Age of AI and Other Emerging Technologies.
