Often within the Doujin scene, great games come along as a surprise with little fanfare. This is how it felt for me with Udongein X (although it was known to be a quality title before its Steam port). Many circles make one game and then disappear, yet here we are with a big upcoming project made by Bar Holographic Otaku who has proven they know rewarding game design.
Touhou Artificial Dream in Arcadia mixes a lot of elements from known RPGs. The basic rules and dungeon-crawling of Shin Megami Tensei, the capturing of party members from Pokémon, and the sudden change to a danmaku shooter from Undertale during these captures. The result of this mixing has the potential to feel absolutely unique. The end product may also turn out to have a daunting size, but for now, here's a peek at the demo's boss, Utsuho Reiuji!

Something seems to be pulling fangame creators to the roguelite subgenre. The first Touhou Blooming Chaos was a top-down action game and its sequel is enriching this approach with procedural and random elements. I was at first a little untrusting to its developer, but I've quickly caught on that they're serious about their projects. Plus, this game in particular features a lass that is likely to draw me to anything, just as she draws people's woes and curses to herself...

It's been a really long time since I've mentioned MyACG studio, even though they've been busy with several new releases. Originally an Early Access title, Endless Dream is a much more humble game by them and a10a010 that seems to take on the "EX Rumia" fan myth and fleshes it out. Humble needn't mean unworthy of our time, so let's see how it tackles the roguelite-subgenre of action games.

Hecataker was made by Warugaki (悪餓鬼) in 2021 and the name gives it all away: It's Helltaker meets Touhou. Does this tribute honour the original?

Is it east versus east, or girl against girl?
Touhou 17.5 was released by Twilight Frontier (Tasofro) and Team Shanghai Alice in October 2021. It had its fair share of delays, making it actually younger than Touhou 18. This title is especially different from previous fighting games in that it concentrates fully on its story modes.
Flandre Scarlet usually doesn't have much of a reason to leave her basement. Yet fate has it that she should play a big role in the incident surrounding the beast realm's matriarch and the underground petroleum. Will she rise to the challenge?

Help Me Remember, Satori-sama is a puzzle/quiz/thinking game released by ISY in March 2022. Satori must help her dear pet Utsuho remember a variety of items. The player's job is to guess the answer before Satori clocks out from over-exertion. It's the kind of game that reminds us we like to tell ourselves that we're smarter than we actually are. Such a reality check can be frustrating, but somehow, I want exactly that from time to time. Let's explore together how this title fares!

Steam storepage: https://store.steampowered.com/app/913740/WORLD_OF_HORROR/

It has come that time when I felt like I needed to make something unusual, even off-brand for you. World of Horror has been developed as Early Access in 2019 by indie-developer Panstasz and published by Ysbryd Games to overall very positive buzz. Said tag of unfinishedness is generally used quite sensibly here, as what we currently have is already very satisfying, yet justifies some rough edges.
This title is an RPG borrowing elements from the western Lovecraftian mythology as well as the eastern equivalent of Junji Ito, and in the end fusing the two to throw you into an intimidating Japan facing the wrathful arbitration of Elder Gods.
One could say that "Worst to Best" lists are plentiful on Youtube and therefore not inherently original. But I think this format is a great opportunity to condense the experience of dozens of hours of playtime into a video of digestible length.

Mega Man fans are certainly not going hungry when they're looking into the Touhou fandom. While not every action-platformer with a ranged weapon as standard is automatically a copy of the Blue Bomber, many are wearing their influences unsubtly or even proudly. MegaMari, Rock Maiden, Bakartet X, Touhou Koukayaku The Game, Ghost Hunter Reimu, Sanae Toumaden X...that's a long list. Younger than most of these titles is Bar Holographic Otaku's Udongein X (Cross). I heard this one originally came out on itch.io. After you've consumed many or all of the above games, is there still a reason to try this one? Let's find out!

Kubinashi Recollection is a Touhou fangame developed by Paradot (
給食頭蛮) and published by Phoenixx Inc. in 2021, and was brought over to Steam on PC and Nintendo Switch later that year. The footage shown is from the Steam version.
At first, this title might look very plain. It also uses very few buttons. But the amount of gimmicks introduced throughout Sekibanki's journey throughout the Dream World makes it a very challenging puzzle-platformer in the end. But does that mean only masochists and absolute brainiacs will enjoy it? We'll find out over the course of the video!

A few years ago, Touhou Genso Wanderer was one of the pioneers of Touhou fangames getting official localizations as well as making it onto consoles. Its definitive edition (Reloaded) followed with additional content. With Lotus Labyrinth R coming to Steam (May), PS4 and Switch (both September) in 2021, we've finally received a sequel. Except I believe it's chronologically set before Genso Wanderer, making it a prequel. Also, it's actually a remake of an even older game by Aquastyle, so I think I'll slice off a piece from Borderlands and call it a pre-sequel.

Late summer of 2021 was plentiful for new Touhou fangame releases. Among them all, this pixel RPG starring the Three Fairies of Light developed by yomogi_soft and published by Phoenix Inc. seems to be the most overlooked. Perhaps that was justified? Or are we unearthing a gem here?
