<media:description>During a hygiene awareness session,14-year-old Maaza, president of a UNICEF-supported Hygiene Club, demonstrates how a local handwashing station is made.

She teaches other children how to make the sinks using locally available materials, promoting handwashing in homes.

UNICEF works hand in hand with local communities to promote hygiene practices through children-led hygiene clubs across the River Nile state.</media:description>

<media:description>In her small house, Mona, a mother of seven, begins her morning routine. She sweeps the house and washes the dishes as her youngest, Muhanad, sleeps in a sling mounted on a nearby bed. She just breastfed him, and it will be a few hours before he wakes.

With her older children at school, Mona seizes the quiet morning to prepare a quick meal before their return. She has mastered the art of mixing different foods for balanced diet. She quickly peels pumpkin, boils it, and adds green leafy vegetables while another pot of brown beans simmers. The latter is a staple in almost every Sudanese household- affordable and nutritious.

A year ago, Mona fed her children whatever food was available. She was unaware of the importance of a diverse diet in preventing malnutrition and diseases. Looking back, she recalls some of her past mistakes, including giving her infant water, especially during the hot season, to quench their thirst, before they were six months old.

Now, she knows better.

<media:description>When Samer and his family arrived in Atbara, he enrolled in the hygiene club at a UNICEF-supported child-friendly space. He was later selected as one of the role models to attend a UNICEF-supported workshop on menstrual hygiene management, where he was introduced to making reusable pads, especially for adolescent girls affected by the crisis.

Since then, he has never looked back. Samer has mastered the art of making these essential materials, which today benefit hundreds of girls in his community, including his four sisters. To further support his great work, UNICEF continues to provide all the materials like fabric, sponge, scissors, sewing kits to ensure he has enough to support the continuous supply chain.

<media:description>Hassan, a senior nurse at the UNICEF-supported Al Nau Hospital in Sudan, shares what motivated him to do the life-saving work at the hospital’s trauma ward for over five decades now. “When I have done my job, I’m happy to see smiles on patients’ faces and see them recovering and resting.” he says.

Since the onset of the war in Sudan, thousands of children have been killed or injured.

The children in Sudan need a ceasefire now.
