Year after year, issues that matter most to South Dakotans have been ignored as some of our lawmakers continue to introduce anti-trans legislation that would codify discrimination in our state.

Join the Human Rights Campaign, the Transformation Project Advocacy Network, the Black Hills Center for Equality and our team at the ACLU of South Dakota for a virtual panel discussion on past and present anti-trans legislation and how you can get plugged in for the fight ahead.

In recent years, LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit advocates have made giant leaps forward. However, the fight for equality is far from over.
Discrimination is still the law of the land in many states – especially in South Dakota. Even after June 15's historic Supreme Court ruling where workplaces protections were solidified for queer people, issues that matter to South Dakotans are still ignored. Certain state and local lawmakers habitually make it a point to attack our LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit community during and outside of legislative session.

So, it’s really not a shock that LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit people feel disconnected to the political process. Yet, the ballot box is a viable path to a better community – people just have to vote.
That’s why we’re working with a coalition of local organizations like Sioux Falls Pride, Black Hills Center for Equality, the Transformation Project and Equality South Dakota, along with individuals through our voteOUT campaign. This campaign is an effort to reconnect LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit South Dakotans to their power as voters and move equality forward.

Every eligible LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit voter has an obligation to make our voices heard on issues facing our community so we as queer people can create a political atmosphere that supports our right to thrive.
Together we can make South Dakota a better place for everyone through education, empowerment, and storytelling. Please stay tuned to our social media pages for updates on voteOUT and action steps for 2020 and beyond.

The Constitution protects your right to peacefully assemble and protest, but doing so it isn’t without risk. Standing up for your right to protest can be challenging, especially when demonstrations are met with the threat of violence. Knowing your rights and what actionable steps to take if you experience or witness police misconduct is important. If you are heading out to a protest, it is essential to remember your rights and to utilize them properly.
