When her niece passed away shortly after childbirth, she was left with two newborns to care for, including her own baby and her late niece’s child. With no formula and no food, she did something unimaginable: she began breastfeeding both babies. Out of love. Out of survival. Thanks to the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services (MCDSS), and support from the European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid (ECHO), the Community Welfare Assistant Committees (CWACs) quickly stepped in. Together with UNICEF Zambia, they helped this family receive baby formula, clothes, and social protection support under the Public Welfare Assistance Scheme (PWAS). Today, this baby girl is safe, smiling, and growing, proof of what’s possible when we show up for families, no matter how far they are.
