More about our rescue work: TinyKittens.com

This mama, dad and two mini-me kittens are feeling safe for the first time after being evacuated out of the wildfires in BC.

Normally, we would *never* keep intact males and females together, but we are monitoring them 24/7 on our livestream and just couldn't bear to break them up when they were finally feeling safe... Spays and neuters will be scheduled ASAP. :)

There isn't anywhere for displaced feral cats to go during large scale emergencies like we're seeing with the BC wildfires, so we offered to take in as many as we can. Meet the others: TinyKittens.com/live

We will provide medical care, spay/neuter, vaccinate, socialize and adopt these cats into loving homes. If any of the adults are not receptive to socialization, we will place them in exceptional barn homes and follow a strict rehoming protocol to ensure they are settled and happy in their new homes.

Taking on this many ferals at once is going to stretch us extremely thin, and we couldn't do it without your support, our amazing volunteers, and the veterinary team at Mountain View Veterinary Hospital.

To the countless other individuals and organizations out there doing far more than we are to help the humans and animals affected by the wildfires... THANK YOU.

UNCENSORED RESCUE REALITY
This is uncensored rescue reality TV - we give the best care we possibly can, but sometimes we have sick cats/kittens, poo, live births, and any number of other things.

Concerning Trolls: Ignore them. That's what they hate the most. Their goal is to upset you so you yell at them. They think this is funny.

To configure a "Chat Identity", you will need to create a new Channel on YouTube. Click on your profile icon located in the top-right corner of the page and click on the gear icon which has a tool tip reading "YouTube Settings". Then click on the link "See all my channels or create a new channel". Click on the button labeled "Create a new channel". Type in the identity/name you wish to use and click on the "Create" button.

You can toggle between your main channel/Identity and others you have created by clicking on the Profile icon again. All of the channels you create while logged onto a specific Google account are tied together but look as a different user to everyone else.

UPDATE AUG 2: Sweetie and Elliott have been moved temporarily into another room, and will have supervised colony time until Sweetie is able to get his neuter on Tuesday. This colony is *extremely* bonded, and it is important to consider their emotional well-being by letting them interact as much as possible.

NAMES:
We have names for our new arrivals evacuated from the #BCWildfires! We are keeping with our #BCStrong / resilience theme and naming the new colony after communities affected by the wildfires.

Gabby (torbie mama)
Cariboo (classic torbie girl)
Ellie (mackerel torbie girl, after Elephant Hill)
Cordelius (ginger BOY, an homage to their rescuer, Dee, as well as Gord Downie from the Tragically Hip)

Riske (white floofy boy w/ green eyes, after Riske Creek)
Cache (white floofy boy w/ copper eyes, after Cache Creek)
Raven (white floofy girl with blue eyes, after Raven Lake)
Renata (white girl w/ one blue and one copper eye, after Renata Creek)
Milo (ginger tuxie boy, after the Mile Houses)
Luca (dilute calico girl, after Lucas Lake)

Sweetie (tabby and white adult male)
Maisey (grey tabby adult female)
Elliott (classic tabby tuxie adult male)

We will need a lot of exceptional homes for these exceptional kitties! Here's everything you need to know to apply: http://TinyKittens.com.adopt

This colony of 13 cats and kittens was trapped from a wildfire evacuation zone by an amazing volunteer named Dee. There isn't anywhere for displaced feral cats to go during large scale emergencies like we're seeing with the BC wildfires, so we offered to take in as many as we can. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, please visit the chats at our other two livestreams at http://TinyKittens.com/live - we don't have enough moderators to run three chats. Thank mew!

NAMES: We went with a #BCStrong / resilience theme:
Floofy black boy: Phoenix (who will rise from the ashes...)
Floofy tabby boy: Hale (strong, vigorous, resilient)
Tabby tuxie boy: Birch (Celtic symbol of new beginnings)
Torbie girl: Pele (the Goddess of Fire)

JULY 23: Socialization begins today! Our goal is to find these guys homes once they are spayed/neutered and ready for a pampered life with a human family. If you're interested, adoption info is at: http://TinyKittens.com/adopt

JULY 22: We have just arrived from the airport with four feral kittens approximately 4 months old, who have been evacuated from the #BCWildfire zone. The two tabbies and the panther are boys, and the torbie is a girl.

These kittens (and countless more) are safe thanks to the tireless efforts of Pet Safe Coalition Society of Canada, whose mission is to assist animals during large scale emergencies like we’re seeing with these wildfires. They have been working round the clock to get animals out of harms way and reunited with their families. The four we have just collected don’t have families, so we are taking them to help free up space in the evacuation zone.

We are so grateful for our amazing firefighters, RCMP, NPOs, volunteers, and the thousands of kind strangers who are coming together across the province to make sure humans AND animals have shelter, food, medical care and supplies during this difficult time.

For those who may be worried, we are not in any danger from the fires in our location.

Behold the magic of Grandpa Mason hugging Lucy, whilst surrounded by kitteny shenanigans.

"Grandpa" Mason is an ancient, battle-scarred feral cat with terminal kidney disease. His many scars told us how hard he had fought to live as long as he has, and we felt he deserved a chance to experience comfort and love during his sunset months. He remains fierce with humans, but turns into a total marshmallow with kittens.

Our feral "Canada" kittens were orphaned, and had nearly starved to death before they were discovered in a barn. They had a rough start in life, but are getting stronger every day. Grandpa is helping teach them all the things they would have learned from mom, and it turns out he also gives great hugs.

Fall in love with them on our 24/7 rescue livestream: http://TinyKittens.com/live

The only way to prevent the suffering that results from cat overpopulation is to spay and neuter. If you don't want to give up having kittens around, go to your local shelter and sign up to be a foster parent. Shelters have endless supplies of kittens in need of loving care, and will be so happy for the help!

More about our rescue work: http://TinyKittens.com

Organizations like PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and Project Cat trap and kill feral cats. They advocate *against* Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR): http://bit.ly/2tljdnk

Their actions tell the world feral cats are disposable. They reinforce perceptions that feral cats are not worth spaying, neutering or compassionate care. Euthanasia doesn't erase the hardships these cats may have already endured, it only ensures they will never experience joy.

To solve cat overpopulation, we must change the narrative about feral cats. Instead of reinforcing the belief that ferals are disposable, let's start talking about how remarkable they are, so more people will care.

If you'd like to be a part of the humane solution, join or start a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) effort in your community. Volunteer, donate, foster, adopt and become an advocate for feral cats. Make sure you research rescue organizations working with feral cats, and only support those who understand that feral cats are worthy of compassionate care.

Imagine what we all would have missed if PETA or Project Cat had been the ones trapping ferals in our area. All of these beloved ferals would have been euthanized, along with the hundreds we've TNR'ed:

Grandpa Mason and Cassidy the #MiracleKitten at TinyTuxies
With a Little Hope, Faith & Charity
Calvin's Quartet
The Princess and the E.
Skye the Sink Cat
Greener Pastures: Corsica & Her Fabergé Egg
Miss Radley & Co.
QueEnara, Jet Set GO
Tiger Buffy Tales
Mr T Brady, Bill and Pliny- from the forest to the beach
Sloaney, Queen of My Heart
Maralix Take A Chance On Me
QB & Macey - From Hisses to Kisses
Ramses - Urban Feral to Country King
NoElf - Sisters in Spirit
Squidy Pyncy Joy-Joy

There are too many to even list! Which is actually pretty amazing proof that TNR + treat / socialize / adopt IS effective, and that feral community cats are WORTH SAVING.

So, what's the deal with the neck "biting"? In the video, Mason is very relaxed, sleepy, and feeling snuggly. You can tell because of the enthusiastic biscuits he's making on Puck, as well as the purring. He then escalates his behavior by appearing to bite her throat and hold on. It can look scary when you're watching on the livestream, but he's actually just putting his teeth on her and holding her in place. In his case, it is never an act of aggression. In this case, it is an expression of his feelings of comfort and affection.

It is similar to Nel comfort nursing on her pacifier. My other cats do it all the time to each other - snuggle, put their teeth on each other, groom each other, and sometimes that progresses to play fighting. Cassidy the #MiracleKitten will bite my neck when he's really into his biscuit-making. We've seen almost all of our mama cats do this to their kittens once the kittens get older and the moms want to start playing with them.

We also see it when kittens get overly exuberant with their moms, and the moms want to teach them to behave. Mason has done this too, which is great since the kittens don't have a mom to teach them proper kitten manners. :)

So, rest assured we are observing Mason closely and he is not doing anything concerning. He is not being aggressive, and is actually helping with the kittens' socialization.

All of that said, he is supervised when he has play time with the kittens, because he is so much bigger than they are and gets SO excited. :D

It is important to note that in some cases, neck/throat biting IS a sign of aggression and/or dominance. If this is happening with your cats, it is important to monitor them closely and observe their behavior to try to understand what is motivating it. Take videos when it happens, and document what each cat was doing leading up to the incident. Bring this to your vet to help them come up with a plan to address any inappropriate or potentially harmful behavior.

Hopefully that helps!

Grandpa Mason is an ancient, battle-scarred feral cat with terminal kidney disease. Instead of euthanasia, we felt he deserved to live his sunset months in comfort and safety.

He remains quite feral with humans, but melted our hearts when he met these tiny orphaned kittens!

A lap full of purring kittens + one makeshift kitten pacifier == the cutest thing you'll see all day! Please note I am NOT bottle feeding Nelvana - this is not proper technique for bottle feeding. The kitten pacifier has a nipple with no hole in it, and the bottle is filled with water to give it some weight and make it easier to hold. Nelvana developed some rather enthusiastic comfort nursing behaviors while she and her siblings were waiting for help to arrive, so the pacifier helps with that. :)

These six kittens were too little to survive on their own after their mama was killed. Luckily, someone found them just before they starved to death. You can prevent this from happening to other kittens like these by spaying and neutering!

UPDATE JULY 5TH: Radiographs confirmed Nelvana has at least eight broken ribs on her left side, consistent with falling or being stepped on when she was 2-3 weeks old (before she was rescued). They are healing, and we are monitoring closely.

THEIR STORY: Remember Shacara, Cassidy the #MiracleKitten's awesome vet tech who took such great care of him that first horrible night at Animal Emergency Clinic? These little guys would not have survived much longer, as all six were well on their way to starving to death. They weigh between 215 and 275 grams at 4-5 weeks old, but should be more than double that weight.

Learn more about our rescue work: http://TinyKittens.com

When our “Canada” kittens were orphaned and left without food, they learned to comfort themselves by nursing on each other.

Now that they have plenty of food, they are also comfort-nursing by wallowing in their food for long periods of time. Neither behavior is the end of the world, but too much nursing on siblings can cause problems, and it’s impossible to keep them clean and dry when they are spending so much time in their food bowls.

We’ve been getting creative trying to give them some more suitable options for their comfort-nursing, using a combination of clever items created by #TinyVillagers, kitten nursing gear, a snuggle mom (who has a heartbeat), a heat source, and their canned food.

The goal is to divert them to something other than siblings or food bowls when a human isn’t around and they feel the urge to comfort nurse. So far, success has been fleeting… ;)

What is comfort nursing? It’s not about food, or a sign that they are hungry. It’s something all kittens do naturally with their moms, so when kittens are orphaned, they often develop nursing behaviors that simulate the comfort they felt when they were nursing and snuggling with their mom.

For example, Cassidy the #MiracleKitten nurses on one particular blanket, purrs and makes biscuits when he’s feeling snuggly and sleepy. I’m sure many of your cats do similar things. It’s usually nothing to be concerned about, as long as it’s not causing injury and they aren’t ingesting anything unhealthy.

Teeny tiny Nelvana of the Northern Lights needed all of her superpowers to survive until she and her siblings were rescued...

Radiographs today confirmed at least 8 broken ribs on her left side, consistent with being stepped on or falling a few weeks before she was rescued. Rads are posted at http://fb.com/TinyTapeworms, if you’d like to see what a five-week-old kitten with multiple rib fractures looks like. :(

What Nelvana experienced is just one example of the suffering caused by cat overpopulation. Luckily, there are easy ways to prevent it: spay, neuter, trap-neuter-return (TNR), share Nel’s story, and become an advocate for responsible pet ownership!

There's unfortunately not much we can do to help Nel's ribs heal faster. The good news is that there is nothing sharp that could puncture a lung or other organ, and they don't seem to be painful for her any more. We will continue to monitor the situation very closely, but if all goes as hoped, she should have a full recovery.

Fall in love with Nelvana and her five adorable siblings on our 24/7 rescue livestream at http://TinyKittens.com/live

Mason's case study: http://tinykittens.com/cases/mason

We brought Mason in during a big Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) event back in October. A developer had purchased a large rural property with several derelict barns, and was just beginning to bulldoze them, not realizing they were home to about 60 feral cats and kittens. We got permission to set up a feeding station and start trapping the cats to spay and neuter them and find homes for as many as we could. We brought in about 26 cats that weekend, including Mason. He had a massive growth on the bottom of his right paw, his tail had been broken multiple times in multiple places, he had infections, and he needed extensive dental surgery. We took care of his paw, treated his infections and neutered him, and then kept him so he could recover from that surgery before doing his dental. He was the first feral I've had to splint and bandage without sedation, which is tricky enough with a socialized cat! He is one of the oldest surviving ferals we have seen, and throughout his recovery, he made it clear his feral instincts were deeply ingrained.

We planned to return him to his home on the farm when he was healed (the property owner agreed to continue feeding the cats and we provide food and medical care on an ongoing basis). Then we got his bloodwork back and discovered he has advanced kidney disease. It would be cruel for us to return him, knowing he would suffer and was unlikely to survive the winter. We had two options: euthanize him, or give him a chance to adjust to life in a home and provide hospice care for as long as he had left. We are a no-kill organization, and believe that any life is worth saving as long as we are able to alleviate suffering. Mason's many scars told us how hard he had fought to survive this long, and we were determined to give him a chance to experience comfort, safety and freedom from pain during his sunset months.

I took Mason to my house, because his feral instincts told him humans were predators, and he reacted appropriately when one tried to interact with him. He was not a candidate for adoption.

I knew he was starting to feel comfortable here when I would come out of my bedroom in the morning and see the whole house rearranged - toys everywhere, rugs moved, pillows off the couch, all general indications of a happy cat engaging in rambunctious play. He still wanted no contact from me other than play time, but I was relieved that he was so clearly feeling better and happy to be alive. I thought that was a pretty great outcome for an old, terminally ill feral cat, and didn't think it could get any better.

Then one day, I brought my foster kittens out for a "field trip" into the main house so they could experience a new setting as part of their socialization. They swarmed over to Mason's lair, and started climbing all over him, just really invading his personal space. I was right there next to them, holding my breath and expecting him to hiss or growl and then slink away to hide under the couch... When Scrammy (ginger kitten) started licking Mason's ear, and Mason leaned into it, I completely melted... the one thing missing for Mason had been contact with another living being, and while he didn't want that from ME, he had clearly been craving it from his own kind.
