World Refugee Day 2017 in Syria was a special day this year where hundreds of refugees from Iraq, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Eretria, Ethiopia, and Afghanistan met and celebrated this day by showing their cultures, talents and traditions.
UNHCR Syria held an open day with handmade products made by refugees, drawings, art, musical performances and sketches. A very colourful folkloric fashion show with all countries participating was cheered by the audience. Many corners around the event area for painters to draw people, calligraphers to write visitors names in beautiful Arabic letters.
The Sudanese wedding sketch grabbed audiences as it was colourful, emotional with a show of traditions and wedding practices.
Singers, dancers, painters, artists, ballet, photographers just purely talented people are the refugees living in Syria from over 35 different nationalities.

World Refugee day is a day to celebrate and remember Refugees, their resilience, their talents, their hopes and dreams for a better future.

We wanted refugees living in Syria to enjoy this day, to sing to dance and express their joy while they show the world their beautiful heritage through art, culture and traditions.

6 years of the Syrian crisis has left destruction beyond comprehension.
With over 2 million homes partially damaged and 400,000 totally destroyed. Rebuilding the damage will be a huge undertaking, but rebuilding lives, restoring livelihood is most important for people to start over again.

UNHCR is doing its best to help Syrians get back to their lives with shelter support, Non-Food Items, and a variety of protection services designed to support people and their livelihood, by providing protection and bringing hope.

The coastal region in Syria and mainly Tartous and Latakia is responsible for most of the greenhouse vegetables produced in Syria.

Storms and conflict have affected many greenhouses and farms on the Syrian coast in Tartous and Latakia. Farmers went into debt, not able to rehabilitate their farms, devastation and high cost of living deprived them from restarting production on their farms.

A joint project between the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the UN Refugees Agency, UNHCR assessed the farmers' needs and decided to support 4000 greenhouses by fixing infrastructures, equipping with plastic sheeting and giving seeds to farmers.

The aim of the project is to improve livelihood and food security of affected displaced Syrians and local farming host communities. Many of the farms provide shelter and work to displaced families. Both communities benefit directly and are back to producing and selling vegetables in the market.

UNHCR and its staff support this year’s theme of women’s right for decent work and the right to equal opportunities and UNHCR in Syria has launched #IStandforWomen

This is not just another day, its Women’s day, it is a chance for the world to recognize the role that women play in society and in every walk of life. When you educate a girl, you educate a nation. Women play such an integral role in life just as important as males and they deserve to be treated equal and with dignity at all times. It is a day to mark the injustice that women suffered through the ages. It is time for a positive change where we won’t have to think about the differences anymore, such concepts as equal rights, opportunities and equal benefits should not be an issue anymore in this day and age.

Shelter rehabilitation scheme has helped some 11,000 people to refurbish homes destroyed by war, with plan to more than double support this year

In HOMS, Syria – When 80-year-old Mahmoud first returned to his home in the old city of Homs after years of displacement, he found a scene of total destruction. The entire neighbourhood lay in ruins and his house had been gutted by fire.

“It took me years to buy this house, and it was all destroyed in a matter of seconds,” he told officials from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. As one of the first families to return to their neighbourhood, they found themselves living alone in the shell of their former home with no doors, windows or furniture.

More than 11 million Syrians have been driven from their homes during almost six years of brutal conflict. Some 4.8 million have sought exile in neighbouring countries, while a further 6.3 million are displaced within the country.

The UN Refugee Agency in Syria hand in hand with its partners has established a network of community centers in different areas in Syria.

These centres are safe public places where women, men, boys and girls of diverse backgrounds can meet for social and recreational activities and obtain integrated protection services ranging from legal aid, education and livelihood support to psycho-social support, SGBV prevention and response and child protection interventions, in accordance with their humanitarian needs.
The services provided through these centers can empower displaced people to cope with the consequences of the crisis and strengthen their resilience.
The UN Refugee Agency has already opened 74 centres across Syria (and aims to open another 26 centres in 2017).

UN agencies are rushing to provide urgent aid to the civilians of Aleppo and are finding fledgling signs of optimism for the future, according to Sajjad Malik, Representative of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in Syria.
Malik had been in the city assessing the needs of its civilians and organizing aid after the siege of the eastern parts of Aleppo ended last month.
“We need to help people in east Aleppo to at least start rebuilding their lives and livelihoods,” he added.

The brutal fight for Aleppo, which lasted over four years, ended last month when government-backed forces re-established control over the ancient city, and evacuations of citizens were arranged. There are now tentative hopes that the warring sides will engage in peace talks to bring the broader civil war to a close.

Among the estimated 1.5 million people now in Aleppo, UN agencies have access to about 400,000, the same number that are estimated as displaced in the city. Some families have settled with friends and family. However, many thousands are sheltering in damaged buildings or informal settlements.

UNHCR, other UN agencies and partners have been focusing on immediate assistance. The priorities are shelter, food, fuel, winter clothing, water and sanitation, medical support and civilian protection for a population scarred by years of conflict. The UN currently has just over 100 staff in Aleppo, working with partners including the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, as well as Syrian NGOs and local authorities. A small part of Aleppo still lacks access to aid, primarily due to the presence of unexploded ordnance, and support is urgently required to help safely remove these hazards.

In a statement last month, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said there was still a “grave risk” that displacement and suffering would not stop at Aleppo, but would be repeated in other wars. “For the sake of civilian protection everywhere, Syria’s conflict must be ended, now, and without delay,” he said.
