UNICEF Algérie is working in the Sahrawi refugee camps near Tindouf to improve hashtag#health services, provide quality hashtag#education and promote inclusion for children and families. We are collaborating with other UN agencies to address multiple needs and help create a sense of normalcy in one of the oldest refugee crises in the world.
Imane Khelif, our national ambassador and champion for children’s rights visited refugee camps at the end of last September. She spent time in these resilient communities and engaged with the children who call these places home. Formation des enfants ambassadeurs des Droits des Enfants ONPPE-UNICEF.Une session de formation a eu lieu le 2 novembre 2023 à Alger, en faveur des enfants ambassadeurs des Droits des Enfants en Algérie, une initiative mise en place dans le cadre du partenariat entre l'Organe national de la Protection et de la promotion de l'enfance (ONPPE) et le bureau de l'UNICEF en Algérie avec pour thème central les Droits de l'Enfant.
Les dix enfants ambassadeurs des droits des enfants en Algérie , issus de plusieurs wilayas du pays ont été récemment élus suite à un concours national.
Durant deux jours, nos ambassadeurs ont assisté à différentes interventions d’experts nationaux sur plusieurs thématiques
les introduisant à leur rôle crucial de porte parole et défenseurs des Droits de l´Enfant. Ils ont pu acquérir plus de connaissances dans la compréhension des Droits des enfants, de la loi de protection des enfants en Algérie, bonnes pratiques pour la création de contenu digital, la prise de parole en public et le media-training.
Dans un monde où les droits de l'enfant sont essentiels à leur bien-être et à leur développement, l'UNICEF travaille avec les partenaires nationaux pour donner aux enfants les outils et moyens nécessaires pour devenir des acteurs du changement.

The limited opportunities for self-reliance in the harsh desert environment have left no other option for refugees than to greatly rely on international aid for their human and socioeconomic development and for their very survival.
UNICEF current humanitarian program in Tindouf aims at improving immunization, mothers and children’s health, access of children and adolescents to quality education, care and education for children living with a disability, promotion of children rights and social inclusion and participation of youth.
Grounded on UNICEF’s Core Commitments for Children in Humanitarian Action, assistance is provided to thousands of Sahrawi children, adolescents and women to help address their essential needs and to contribute build resilience through focused technical assistance, capacity building and provision of key supplies to children, including in times of emergencies.
Between 2015 and 2017, the area was affected by severe floods and intense wind with severe damages to the camps, particularly to health and education infrastructures, resulting in a serious disruption in the provision of services to children, women and communities. The assessment of education infrastructure facilities carried out by UNICEF showed that over 50% of the WASH facilities in 67 education infrastructures were not functioning affecting more than 40,000 students; 27% of the same infrastructures do not have latrines for girls, which in some schools, is a determining factor for girls’ absenteeism.
UNICEF Algeria has rehabilitated and reconstructed 21 schools including climate resilient WASH facilities in 2018/2019. The construction of 4 additional new schools will be also carried out in 2020.
