“Now we have clean water, and we drink from it,” says Mariam, 11, in Al-Shmetiya in Deir-ez-Zor.

For more than a decade, families here lived without reliable access to safe drinking water, putting children at risk of waterborne disease.

With support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development through the KfW Development Bank, UNICEF installed solar-powered systems at the local water treatment plant, ensuring reliable access to clean water.

In Syria, recent months have marked historic moments for children and their families, reshaping the path toward durable solutions. These changes open critical opportunities for the voluntary return of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs).

From 8 December 2024 to 31 July 2025, nearly 1.6 million IDPs have returned to their places of origin. Most are women and children, many displaced multiple times. Forced to flee suddenly, these families left behind all their belongings, carrying only the clothes on their backs, and continue to live with deep fear and trauma.

Among them, 2,000 people have returned to Al-Shola village in Deir-ez-Zor governorate—children and families coming back to a community devastated by conflict, with no access to basic services.

UNICEF has provided vaccinations to these children, affirming their fundamental right to return voluntarily, safely, and with dignity. Yet, no child should be forced to return to environments where their life or safety is at risk, whether accompanied or alone.

UNICEF urgently calls for sustained access to essential services, including health care, clean water, education, and psychosocial support, especially for women and children returning to Al-Shola and similar areas. Their future depends on it.

In the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes that struck Syria in 2023, the lives of thousands of children were upended. Homes, schools, and vital services were damaged or destroyed, leaving families in urgent need of support. In response, the Government of Kuwait generously contributed USD 8 million to UNICEF’s emergency response, helping to restore a sense of normalcy for children across affected areas.

With this support, UNICEF established 73 prefabricated classrooms and a WASH unit in Aleppo, allowing children to return to safe learning environments. In addition, 10 damaged schools were repaired, benefiting more than 6,000 students, while early childhood education kits reached over 1,300 young children with age-appropriate learning and play materials.

Kuwait’s contribution also made a significant impact in the field of nutrition. More than 27,500 children under five were screened for malnutrition, with 102 children receiving treatment for severe wasting. Over 7,400 pregnant and lactating women were reached with vital nutrition services. Essential nutrition supplies were distributed widely, including fat-based supplements for children, micronutrient powders, and iron and folic acid for women and adolescent girls.

Beyond immediate response, Kuwait’s flexible funding allowed UNICEF to sustain essential services during critical global funding gaps, particularly in hard-to-reach areas such as Al-Hasakeh, Ar-Raqqa, and Deir-ez-Zor. This support ensured that vulnerable children and families continued to receive life-saving care when they needed it most.

This partnership between UNICEF and the Government and people of Kuwait has helped thousands of children across Syria begin to recover, rebuild, and look toward a better future.

In July 2025, widespread and devastating wildfires swept through rural areas of Lattakia Governorate, extending into Tartous, Hama, and Idleb. Triggered by extreme heat, drought, and high winds, the fires rapidly consumed forested and agricultural lands, disrupting lives and damaging critical infrastructure. The response has been severely challenged by rugged terrain, limited water access, and the presence of unexploded ordnance.
Thousands of people have been affected. Dozens of communities are now facing power cuts, water shortages, and strained health services. Livelihoods, particularly farming and herding, have suffered significant losses.
UNICEF is working closely with local authorities and partners to meet urgent needs. Water trucks are deployed to support fire containment efforts, alongside the delivery of diesel fuel. Health and nutrition teams are providing life-saving care, while child protection teams are offering psychological first aid, psychosocial support and safe spaces for children.
These videos and photos capture UNICEF’s immediate response and our continued commitment to reach every affected child and family in the days ahead.

During the past six months, Syria has witnessed historic change—the end of the former regime, the appointment of an interim President, and the formation of new ministries. These developments have sparked a renewed sense of hope for children and families, with the potential to strengthen national unity and support recovery after 14 years of conflict.
In marking the six-month milestone and better understand how these changes are impacting children and young people, UNICEF in Syria engaged a diverse group of young voices from all 14 governorates to share their perspectives and hopes for the future.
