Breakthrough Listen utilizes the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia in the search for signals from intelligent life beyond Earth. In this interview with Green Bank researcher Ryan Lynch, you'll hear about the difficulties of painting the world's largest steerable telescope, how the telescope picks up incredibly faint signals, and what modern convenience Ryan misses most living in the middle of the National Radio Quiet Zone.

Join us on Part 1 of our journey, as we check out the telescope wheels that each carry more than a million pounds of weight, and learn about the 2004 individually controllable panels that make up the surface of the dish, which is larger than a football stadium.

Professor Michael Garrett is director of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics in Manchester, England. Berkeley SETI Research Center sat down with him in May 2017 to talk about his research, including his involvement in SETI, and what it's like to be in charge of the world's third-largest steerable telescope.

On May 31, the Breakthrough Initiatives announced a formal partnership with Jodrell Bank. BSRC is delighted to continue and strengthen collaboration with our friends and colleagues in Manchester.

Using a mix of new interviews and archival audio, we explore the beginnings of SETI and the part that the Green Bank Observatory played in launching the search. From Project Ozma in 1960, to Breakthrough Listen today, Green Bank has been at the forefront of the search for signs of intelligent life beyond Earth for over half a century.

Thanks to Woody Sullivan (University of Washington) and Ellen Bouton (National Radio Astronomy Observatory) for providing the audio of Frank Drake's 1960 Project Ozma talk.

Breakthrough Listen utilizes the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia in the search for signals from intelligent life beyond Earth. But the GBT also investigates a range of other astrophysical phenomena. During a recent visit to the Green Bank Observatory, we took the time to sit down and chat with one of the staff researchers there, Dr. Ryan Lynch. Ryan uses the GBT to search for pulsars. Incredibly important to astronomy, pulsars are collapsed stars that spin incredibly fast and beam out high-powered streams of radiation. They can also be used as probes of gravitational waves emitted from colliding supermassive black holes. Watch this video, produced in collaboration with the NANOGrav gravitational wave observatory, to learn more about this exciting science!

The Astronomy Department at UC Berkeley opened its doors for the annual Cal Day open house on April 16, 2016. There were open labs, an inflatable planetarium, and demonstrations and experiments to engage young and old. The scientists and engineers at Berkeley SETI Research Center opened the doors to the new Breakthrough Listen laboratory, showing visitors how to scan the spectrum with software defined radio equipment, and running live remote observations on the world's largest steerable radio telescope in Green Bank, West Virginia.

Kyle Archer started with SETI as an intern in June 2015. Although he'd run the SETI@home screensaver, Kyle started at UC Berkeley in mechanical engineering, and didn't previously have experience with astronomy or signal processing.

Kyle joined just as the updated SERENDIP equipment was installed in the Green Bank Telescope, and he's worked on monitoring the processing that new data stream.
