Dizzy II - Treasure Island Dizzy, developed by the Oliver Twins and published by Codemasters in 1989.

DIZZY'S CARTOON ADVENTUREW ON TREASUTE ISLAND! Explore the mysterious Island's deserted Tree House Village, Fabulous Gold Mines, Huge Caves, Magic Shops and Secret Treasure! You can even go underwater but remember your snorkel!&quot;

The original Dizzy game was challenging but the puzzle aspect made it a fun game to go back to so it was time for a sequel which is even more challenging!! No need for lives as the game is fairly short and can be done in one sitting when you know what to do. Never mind that there are traps, fire hazards and deadly fish that will end you in a single hit or accidental jump!

But that's not al. The rotating inventory remains so best make sure you have the items in the right order else you might accidently drop the one item that's protecting you from harm. And if that wasn't enough, 30 coins, mostly hidden to find to fully complete the adventure.

But with all that said, its still a fun adventure and it does feel like its out to get you like the original game with it's deadly bats that get in the way or the floor vanishing. The C64 game is a bit better than the Spectrum game with some added animations. The colour clash is a non issue for dizzy but some how remains for objects so you can easily lose those if you drop them in an area of the same colour. There is also a bug where you cant reach the bucket for extra points with the shop keeper. Not game breaking, but a bug all the same.

Dizzy, developed and published by Codemasters in 1988.

&quot;You'll get Dizzy playing this action packed cartoon adventure as you somersault around Fantastic Mystical Kingdoms. Collect the ingredients for a magical potion to kill the evil Wizard ZAKS - a brilliant game by brilliant programmers for brilliant games players!&quot;

The first in the Dizzy series of games and also one of the most challenging. The aim of the game is to collect the key ingredients to mix up the spells/potions required to defeat the wizard. To do so required traversing left to right all the games screens to collect one item at a time and take it where it needs to go. This also adds to some frustration as you are constantly going over the same route with plenty of dangers that can kill you in an instant.

Still there are plenty of extra lives to be found and there are objects to pick up to destroy the organic dangers. It's this aspect of the longplay i'm not happy with. In order to keep the video length sane I stick mostly to the objectives and avoid the enemies although I have tried to show the usage of the special objects. It just adds extra time for doing so with constant backtracking due to holding one item at a time.

Overall a good game, but it doesn't make for a good video. However, dizzy really steps up his game in the upcoming sequel with be able to hold 3 items at a time while having you complete the game in a single life.

Based on the fictional arcade game from 1982 made famous in the movie Wreck-It Ralph in 2012. C64 version released in 2020 and purchasable at https://brokenbytes.itch.io/fix-it-felix-jr

&quot;Fix-It Felix Jr. was one of the most popular 2D platform games ever made. Launching in 1982, it became a pop culture sensation thanks to its colorful 8-bit graphics, simple controls, and addictive gameplay. 38 years later, it's time to re-live those arcade days on your beloved Commodore 64.&quot;

A solid arcade conversion that makes you wonder why the conversion didn't exist back in the day. Great presentation including intro and multiple music tracks. The game is endless but resets every 5 rounds. I show many loops which shows steady difficulty progression. Yeah, I got a bit carried away.

The gameplay is pretty simple. Jumping between windows and hitting them twice to repair them. As soon as you hear the second ping, move to the next window and repeat. Once all windows are repaired you will move up a level. To stop you Ralph - the Idaho slasher will be trying to stop you by throwing bricks down at you. Once all levels are repaired you will reach the top and watch as the buildings residence throws ralph over the top. Then ait all starts over only this time you might have pesky pigeons or flower boxes in your way. To help you, the residence might leave out some spinach pie which you can collect and become invincible for a few seconds.

The game controls really well and there are very few times where I thought the hit detection was a bit sketchy and more often than not in works in my favor.

Street Fighter. Produced by Pacific Dataworks and published by Capcom in 1988.

&quot;Both compelling and addictive, Street Fighter is one of the most outstanding martial arts combat games yet devised. The action is intense as you travel across 5 colourful locations, to combat 10 of the toughest and meanest adversaries you'll ever meet. Japan, China, USA, Thailand and England provide the backdrop for this thrilling spectacle that will test your combat skills and endurance to the limit. ... Let nothing stand in your way&quot;

This game comes in two versions (US/EU) and both are notably different from each other. Two teams had a go at converting the arcade game to the 64 and both failed miserably.

The US release being played here looks and plays more like Yie Ar Kung Fu with its static backgrounds and small hires sprites. The gameplay is fast and you can be beat down in seconds if not paying attention. However the game plays quite badly due to really poor collision detection. The hit box for when the oponent comes at you is huge and you may not even be able to jump away from it. I get by with some cheap crouching kicks and punches but the game steps up when you get to Eagle. Its nearly impossible to dodge the spinning sticks and the move has such a high reach, you may not be able to get that close to him to land hits. It really feels like the game is cheating at this point. The one saving grace in this version is that after you have knocked out all 10 oponents, the game has an end screen. There are no bonus rounds.

Overall, the conversion is a pretty bad rendition of the original arcade game. It does look much better than the EU release but the sounds is so much much worse. I'm not sure US developers for the C64 had anyone that really knew how to programe the sid chip. The EU release is the more playable game even if it looks crap, but its to really saying much.

Street Fighter. Produced by Tiertex and published by GO! Media (US Gold) in 1988.

&quot;Both compelling and addictive, Street Fighter is one of the most outstanding martial arts combat games yet devised. The action is intense as you travel across 5 colourful locations, to combat 10 of the toughest and meanest adversaries you'll ever meet. Japan, China, USA, Thailand and England provide the backdrop for this thrilling spectacle that will test your combat skills and endurance to the limit. ... Let nothing stand in your way&quot;

This game comes in two versions (US/EU) and both are notably different from each other. Two teams had a go at converting the arcade game to the 64 and both failed miserably. Interestingly for the EU release, both are on the same tape.

The EU release played here uses large blocky sprites and scrolling backdrops. The gameplay is slower but overall plays better as hits are easier to land and the enemies hardly use their special moves. At each location you fight 2 fighters, 2-3 rounds in each. Before changing location, you get to earn some bonus score by smashing a pile of bricks. Once all 10 fighters have been defeated the game loops without an ending.

Overall, the conversion is terrible. Its ugly and sounds pretty bad with music that sounds like a butchered version of a soundtrack from Galaxy Force. The game did get quite high in the C64 game charts around the time of the sequels release. I can only imagine that it sold only due to the name and left you with disappointment once you got the game home and loaded up. It is the better of the two versions, but that isn't saying much.

Once the game has been played through once, I cut out remaining fights that use up credits so I can end at the game over screen. The multiload option allows you to turn it off and progress through the game with just the japan background.

Slicks, developed by Digital Design and published by Codemasters for the Commodore 64 in 1992.

&quot;Compete in the Super Prix racing in a championship that spans the world, Join Maclaren, Williams, Ferrari, Benetton, Lotus and Brabham, in an entire race season from the comfort of your own living room. Travel to all of the glamourous locations. From the twists and turns of the Monte Carlo streets, to the enduring accelerating straights of Brazil. Challenge other drivers then qualify for grid position just like the real thing. For a true test of reflexes, challenge your mates in the new simultaneous two player action, head to head, wheel to wheel play off!&quot;

A nice fast Slick! top down racer for the c64. Quite a late release from Codemasters I think, maybe one of the last. Great presentation with some nice music and great gfx. There are 6 levels to race around. Before each one is qualifier and your finishing time determines your gris starting position. Before the race you can challenge or maybe be challenged. Should you win, you get to move to their team and car. The objective is to get the most driver/team points and win the championship.

What you won't see in the video is how brutally difficult the game is and that you need to drive pretty much perfectly to stand a chance of winning. It doesn't help that the cars have different abilities so to progress you need to challenge a driver with a faster car, but not so fast that you can't catch them. Win and their fast car is yours making races easier, assuming you can control the faster car. However should you not win the championship, you do get to keep the car you reached making the next season easier, hopefully.

I played the Commodore Format demo a fair bit back in the day till i was finally good enough at the demo track. The game was 3.99 as is usual for Codemasters budget games and although I never finished it, I did enjoy playing it for a while and at that price, I got my money's worth out of it. It wasn't long after I moved to the Amiga.

Stuntman Seymour by Reflective Designs and published by Codemasters for the Commodore 64 in 1992.

&quot;Seymour leaps from platform to platform across four levels of devastatingly different action movies: Cowboy Western, Pirate Swashbuckler, Chicago Gangster and a James Bond Spy Snow Scene. Stuntastic action in this mega platform romp. Capture the Cowboys, pacify the pirates, grab the gangsters and bash the enemy agents. Bursting with explosions, shoot outs and action leaps, you must help Seymour look good or otherwise he will never make it big in the stunt movies!&quot;

I first played this as a demo from one of the magazine cover tapes. Commodore Format I think, but could have been Commodore Force. After finishing that one level over and over I bought the game on tape for £3.99!!!

The game is a basic platformer and much shorter than I expected with only 4 levels. That's not to say they are not challenging as there are some blind falls you need to do in the game. It did take a while to beat but I think overall it was 3.99 well spent. The game is nice and colourful with a nice tune that plays throughout. It plays kind of like the CJ elephant games. Upon completion the game loops round again.

Years later I got to try the spectrum version (which I didn't know existed at the time) and I thought that version came out quite well even with its colour clash. It was one of the few games where you got to decide how the clash is handled.

DJ Puff's Volcantic Capers, developed by Reflective Designs and published by Codemasters in 1992.

Puff lives on an island with all his ravin mates. Unfortunately the evil dictator Captain Kripp (BOO HISS) has banned everyone from having a good time. He's ordered his gorilla army to go and nick all of DJ's CD collection and chuck them to the four corners of Volcano Island. This has made Puff go bonkers in fact he's gone RAVIN MAD. He parks up his bike and goes off to grab his CD collection back. Captain Kripp is going to be well sorted after Puff's finished with him!&quot;

Another Codemasters game similar to the CJ's Elephant series. This game came out around the same time as Seymour Stuntman also by reflective designs but I am not sure which one came first. The two games are quite similar in a number of ways, although I think this may be a little more advanced with more levels and even animated water. I never owned this game back then although I had played a demo. I think the Seymour demo won me over due to its music and I didn't feel I needed to play DJ. It is more of the same really but I was not won over by the music here.

The game can be quite challenging as you can always see the enemies until you have made a blind jump and some of them, especially the snails can land lucky hits when they chuck their spike bomb around. Some of the moving platforms can push you off the edge if you don't land on the right. There was one area of the game where I had trouble jumping through a platform. I had to backtrack a little and then it went through first go.

Unreleased game developed for Codemasters. Also know as CJs 4th Adventure and Jimbo.

This game isn't really up to the standard of the previous CJ games and probably one reason it didn't get released. Its not a great game but if it was priced right say a 1.99 budget release it would have been acceptable. A fairly short and not overly difficult game. Ideal for the younger player or those that just want a quick simple game without the usual frustrations c64 platformers come with.

There are five levels with only the final one having a boss to fight and it can be a little annoying due to his firing speed compared to the rest of the games enemies. Upon completion the game loops and starts over while at the same time resetting your score, the cheek! You need to play a little more and lose all lives by the final boss if you want to appear on the score board. Each level has a bonus area hidden in one of the death floors. I've not shown them here but they are shown in the Jimbo video.

A second video is included which shows an earlier build of the game. The levels are not entirely built yet but the main difference is the inclusion of end of level bosses. Inf life and energy trainers are forced on so I pretty much just walk through each level. The final level loops over and over and the only way to end is to quit the game. The secret areas do not appear to have been implemented yet.

CJ in the USA, developed by Genesis Software and published by Codemasters in 1991.

&quot;CJ's cartoon adventure across the USA. Wade through New York sewers, ride the roller coaster at Disney Land then blast off at Cape Canaveral. Battle with Bad Dudes, Cowboys, Alligators and Indians. rescue CJ's family from the evil hunter Colonel Fritz.&quot;

Sequel; to the popular Elephant Antics. Like the first game, you have navigate four maze like levels while dodging enemy fire. If you didn't think the first game was challenging enough then maybe this game will put you to the test with spike traps everywhere and bad collision detection to boot. Pixel precision jumping will be required to move from platform to platform and avoiding the spikes.

The game feels smaller than the first with many wide open areas for jumping around. What's with the gloomy music throughout though. A carton game should be much more cheerful. Just to add to the challenge, if you want to see the good ending, there are 3 extra lives to find and collect in each level. Collecting all 12 gives you a satisfying ending and send off for the next game. Not finding them all and the bad ending will leave a bitter taste. Again there is no high score table at the end.

Overall not a bad c64 game, but it doesn't live up to the expectations setup by the first game. The gloomy music and questionable collision detection makes it frustrating to play but you get a fair amount of lives to play with. Upon losing a life you are invulnerable for a few seconds which s a good opportunity to run past and annoying bits.</media:description>
