   <media:description>Eight-year-old Retal was severely injured when her home in the Gaza Strip was hit by shelling on July 5, 2025, killing her two older siblings. She's undergone nine abdominal surgeries since then, but they haven't relieved her suffering.

Gaza's strained health system can't provide the lifesaving medical care she urgently needs. For the past two months, Retal has been waiting for permission to be medically evacuated.

&quot;Retal is dying a slow death, and her condition is getting worse day by day,&quot; her mother says through her tears. &quot;She is my only surviving daughter. I hope she can travel and continue her treatment. Retal is the only one I have left in this life.&quot;

Retal is one of thousands of Palestinian children waiting for medical evaluation from Gaza.

Until Gaza's health care system can handle all needs, UNICEF is calling for medical evacuations at speed and at scale, with the guarantee that all evacuated patients can return to Gaza.

   <media:description>Amani sits in a makeshift shelter in Tawila, Sudan, holding her new baby, born as she and her young children fled the civil war that engulfed their home in Al Fasher, the capital city of North Darfur.

The young family survived on rainwater and scraps as her baby's birth neared. &quot;I was filled with fear. How will I give birth?&quot; says Amani. &quot;What will happen to me? I have young kids. What if I die?&quot; She gave birth on a mat under a tree.

Postnatal care is almost impossible to access in Sudan. In conflict hotspots, 70 percent of health facilities are no longer functioning. UNICEF has set up mobile clinics and health centers in Tawila, offering urgently needed maternal care, immunization and nutrition to support newborn survival. More help is needed.

   <media:description>Speaking from a bed at Al Aqsa Hospital in Deir al Balah, 17-year-old Bilal recalls the day he and his cousin, desperate to find food for their family, walked for hours to a non-UN food distribution site in Nuseirat in the middle of the Gaza Strip.

&quot;We moved closer, thinking the crowd meant safety,&quot; Bilal said. &quot;The gunfire was aimed straight at us, not overhead and not as a warning.&quot; Some were shot in the head, hands and shoulders. Bilal 's knee was shattered.

&quot;Now I've lost my knee joint,&quot; he said. &quot;I went to get food and returned without a knee. Before the war, I was always top of my class. Now I'm lying in the hospital. I lost my ability to walk, and even the right to get food. And in the end, I got nothing. I've lost my future and my dream.&quot;

UNICEF continues to call for an immediate ceasefire — and for humanitarian aid to be allowed in, safely and at scale.

   <media:description>UNICEF spokesperson Tess Ingram reports from an intensive care unit in Gaza City, where 9-year-old Jana is suffering from severe acute malnutrition.

Ingram met Jana 15 months earlier, when she had severe acute malnutrition for the first time. UNICEF was able to evacuate Jana to the south, where she received eight months of treatment at a field hospital and got better.

Jana's mother, Nesma Ayed, says the family returned to the north during the ceasefire, and Jana's health improved. Then came the supply blockade, bare shelves without food and now famine.

Jana's health has deteriorated all over again. &quot;Every day I see my daughter fading before my eyes,&quot; Ayed says. &quot;The pain is indescribable, especially when she had no illnesses before.&quot;

&quot;How is it that we are in the position where a child like Jana has to suffer twice?&quot; asks Ingram. &quot;She had to survive these horrors twice. We get the treatments in to save her life. And yet, the condition remains so bad, and the deprivation continues to the extent that we are back here again. That is unacceptable. This is a shame on the world.&quot;

UNICEF needs immediate, safe and unhindered humanitarian access across Gaza to scale up lifesaving support for children.

   <media:description>As famine conditions deepen in the Gaza Strip, more than one in three people are going days without eating. Food consumption and nutrition indicators have reached their worst levels since the war began.

Between February and July 2025, the number of children diagnosed with acute malnutrition increased sixfold. Every child in Gaza under the age of 5 is at risk.

At a UNICEF nutrition point in the Middle Area, children under 5 are screened for malnutrition and given nutrition supplements. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are also screened. A nutrition specialist is available to support breastfeeding, but access to a balanced diet is limited.

&quot;We will enter a cycle where the mother and the child are malnourished, which will delay the development of the child she gives birth to, likely causing delayed brain development, motor skills and behavioral skills,&quot; says nutrition supervisor Haneen Sultan.

UNICEF needs immediate, unhindered humanitarian access across Gaza to scale up lifesaving support for children.

   <media:description>UNICEF is busy expanding the number of sites where children in some of the worst conflict-affected areas of Sudan's Khartoum state can receive treatment for severe malnutrition. As Sheldon Yett, UNICEF Representative in Sudan, explains, UNICEF only recently gained humanitarian access to Jebel Aulia, one of the hardest-hit localities; in just a couple of months, 1,400 more children were enrolled in treatment programs across 15 sites, up from just two. &quot;Demand is high,&quot; Yett says. &quot;This proves to us why it is so important to be here... The number of children [in need] is growing by the day.&quot;

   <media:description>Meet Latifa, a UNICEF-supported social worker — one of the few qualified caseworkers left in Herat city after Afghanistan's political transition in 2021.

Latifa has managed hundreds of child protection cases, many of which involve halting early or forced marriages, or reuniting unaccompanied and separated children with their families.

Twelve-year-old Farima was on the brink of being married off when Latifa met with her family and persuaded them she was too young. &quot;Sometimes, when I see children in very critical conditions, I really feel like crying and I can't control myself,&quot; Latifa says. &quot;Even after I return home, I still picture that child in my mind and keep thinking about them.&quot;

Foreign aid funding cuts are jeopardizing Latifa's work for children and shuttering the UNICEF child-friendly spaces that provide a lifeline for Afghan girls. Reductions in international aid have already forced the closure of more than 200 child-friendly spaces across Afghanistan in 2025.

   <media:description>Residents of Al-Mushtal Camp in Gaza City are experiencing an acute water shortage. Hundreds of displaced families in the camp are struggling every day to access enough safe water for drinking, cooking and basic hygiene.

One mother describes how people reserve a spot in line a day in advance to fill their container with water. Families have been forced to cut down on bathing and washing clothes in order to conserve water for drinking and cooking. Fourteen-year-old Amal says the smell of sewage is unbearable, and mosquitoes and flies are everywhere. Skin diseases are running rampant.

Water insecurity remains overwhelmingly high throughout the Gaza Strip, with 96 percent of households are experiencing moderate to severe challenges in accessing safe water. This dire situation threatens children’s health and puts additional pressure on already vulnerable families.

UNICEF continues to support water desalination plants and water trucking, but many challenges remain. This is a man-made catastrophe.

&quot;All the children here are sick, they can't resist illness, no food or drink,&quot; says Imad. &quot;The world looks at us with pity and sympathy. We tell the world, end the war on our people and children.&quot;

   <media:description>UNICEF Spokesperson Tess Ingram reports from Deir Al Balah, central Gaza Strip, as famine is confirmed in Gaza City. “Our worst fears that we've been warning about have come true,” Ingram said, noting the possibility that famine will spread. ”Not enough aid, not enough food, nutrition supplies, clean water, medical equipment are getting into the Gaza Strip&quot; as more and more children are being admitted for treatment for acute malnutrition, she added. &quot;The international community must do everything that it can to get on top of this crisis.”

   <media:description>Thousands of children and families have returned to Blue Nile state, Sudan, after two years of having been displaced by the war — yet their homes remain unsafe. As Sudan continues to face the world’s largest child displacement crisis, the continued movement and uncertainty is taking a toll on the nation’s youngest. UNICEF is calling for more funding support to expand the humanitarian response, which includes delivering lifesaving nutrition and health services, installing sustainable safe water systems, creating child-friendly spaces for learning and play and more.

   <media:description>Aid workers like Sospeter Baitwa, UNICEF Supply &amp; Logistics Manager in Khan Younis, Gaza Strip, go to extraordinary lengths to save lives — risking their own in the process. Most days, Sospeter and his team travel to border crossings to collect vital supplies for children and their families. A single trip can take up to 20 hours. UNICEF teams persist despite these and other challenges. Gaza’s 1 million children are depending on it. With famine confirmed amid widespread starvation, destitution and preventable deaths, UNICEF warns there is no time to lose; that without an immediate ceasefire and full humanitarian access, famine will spread and more children will die.
