   <media:description>The Recycling Champions (ReCha), supported by UNICEF South Africa, provides local youth with business training, operational support, and education on the potential of recycling.

The ultimate goal for ReChas is to bridge the gap in the recycling and waste management sector in South Africa, increase recycling rates, reduce waste in landfills and, more importantly, improve livelihoods.

   <media:description>Ubuntu Rising is Justice Desk Africa’s Youth Ambassadors Programme, which focuses on empowering young people in grades 10 and 11 to become children’s human rights defenders.

Supported by UNICEF, under the banner “Standing Together to End Violence”, the programme places a strong emphasis on equipping learners to combat violence in their school communities, with a special focus on preventing gender-based violence and building safe, inclusive environments for all.

From 14 – 17 July, Justice Desk Africa hosted the Youth Ambassadors Conference focused on building connections through activism and featuring workshops, talks, and group activities.

   <media:description>&quot;Our children are not outcasts but also deserve a chance at better futures.&quot;

UNICEF South Africa, the BMW Group South Africa and the Department of Basic Education launched the first BRIDGE coding and robotics hub in KwaZulu-Natal, at KwaZamokuhle Special School.

The hub, serving not only KwaZamokuhle's 220 learners with special needs but also other mainstream schools near and far, is a gateway of excellence, advancing future-focused education for children, educators, and the wider community.

Raising children can be tough, but you don't have to go through it alone.

Through her local parenting support programme, Busisiwe (Busi) Mboneli found a community of fellow parents and caregivers she could feel at home with and learn from.

   <media:description>Fix My Food South Africa is a youth-led movement rising to challenge the power of the food industry and demand accountability from both government and big food companies in South Africa.

We are reclaiming our right to nutritious food, truthful marketing, and a food system that puts people over profits. Our mission is to expose injustice, amplify youth voices, and push for bold policy change that protects the health and dignity of young people across our country.

UNICEF is empowering the Fix My Food advocates to use their lived experiences to speak up about these issues.

   <media:description>You deserve to know what big business is feeding you.

Amid all the challenges mothers and caregivers face when navigating parenthood, they are preyed on at their most vulnerable by the billion-dollar formula industry’s unethical marketing practices.

It needs to stop.

With the well-being of future generations on the line, we call on regulators, investors and health professionals to counter the exploitative marketing of the formula milk industry.

   <media:description>With the support of the Gates Foundation and the Zenex Foundation, UNICEF and the Department of Basic Education are championing the ‘Early Grade Reading Programme’ in South Africa.

The aim is to improve the overall quality of teaching and, in turn, learning across key foundational learning areas: early childhood development, reading and literacy in home languages, and numeracy.

This is the story of the meaningful impact of this work in the Northern Cape province.

   <media:description>Despite notable progress in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services in South Africa, significant challenges persist. This includes too many children still not having access to suitable handwashing and toilet facilities at their schools and ECD centres.

With funding from the Government of Japan and implementation by the Clinton Health Access Initiative, UNICEF South Africa models the Climate-Resilient WASH (CR-WASH) programme in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

This is the story of the meaningful difference that these interventions are making at three schools.

   <media:description>&quot;My teenager seems so angry and we fight a lot, what can I do?&quot;

&quot;I want to be able to talk to my child about their mental health but I don’t know where to start?&quot;

&quot;The online space seems so confusing, how do I talk to my child about staying safe online?&quot;

Caring for a child isn’t always easy and the right answers aren’t always there.

To ensure every child gets the support they need, parents and caregivers need help too. UNICEF supports the South African Department of Basic Education to provide more caregivers with access to the National Parenting Programme. More than 16,000 caregivers across South Africa have strengthened their parenting skills through the programme.

   <media:description>Transferrable, 21st-century skills and soft skills are critical for children to learn and maximize their potential to enter and survive the fast-changing labour market.

While hard skills are easy to identify, measuring soft skills has not been easy as various elements of competencies are interlinked to measure the overall capacity of a person, beyond school grades and/or CVs.

In response to this and with the support of Chery South Africa and the Austrian Development Agency, UNICEF piloted measuring selected competencies among learners, using the power of AI to analyze large datasets and simplify and scale trends.

While considering any risks and concerns, further exploration into using AI may help to enhance the quality and relevance of the national education system as South Africa strengthens its competency-based approach to education.
