By 2035, 1.2 billion young people across the Global South will come of working age—but the world is only projected to create 400 million new jobs. Without bold, coordinated action, the gap between aspiration and opportunity will fuel instability, deepen inequality, and squander the most powerful engine of sustainable development: the next generation.

Hosted by the Government of Qatar, the 2025 Generation Unlimited Global Leadership Council (GLC) meeting, held during the UN General Assembly, brought together Heads of State and Government, CEOs of global companies, leaders of multilateral and civil society organizations, and youth changemakers to chart a bold new path—moving from fragmented projects to national-scale solutions to generate youth employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, co-created through deep government-business-youth collaboration.

In her first address as Global Chair of #GreenRising, Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley laid out an urgent agenda for our planet’s future.

Young people aren’t waiting. From climate-smart farming to clean tech innovation and grassroots mobilization, they’re already reimagining what’s possible. #GreenRising is here to back them.

With PM Mottley’s leadership, we are equipping a generation to rise for people and the planet by committing to:

🌱 Investing in youth-led climate solutions
💪 Shifting power and platforms into young people’s hands
🌍 Championing intergenerational climate justice

@unicef Generation Unlimited stands with her and with youth across the world as we turn this milestone into momentum.

In Barbados, Green Rising is supported by Generation Unlimited’s Lead Government Partner, @GlobalAffairsCanada and new funding pledged by PM Mottley from her @ZayedAwardforHumanFraternity .

On April 17, 2025, during the ECOSOC Youth Forum in New York, Generation Unlimited (GenU), the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), and the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) co-hosted an official side event dedicated to one core belief: young people must be at the center of creating the solutions that shape their futures.

This dynamic event brought together youth leaders and senior stakeholders, policy makers and development practitioners from across sectors in an intergenerational dialogue to discuss education, skilling, employment, and entrepreneurship. The session emphasised that youth are not just beneficiaries—but co-creators, consultants, leaders, and changemakers.

This session was structured around two intergenerational dialogue segments — Livelihoods and Entrepreneurship & Skills, showcasing Public-Private-Youth Partnerships (PPYPs) in action and underlining the urgency of youth-led transformation.

Meet Siraj and his team of volunteers from West Bengal, India, who take pride in calling themselves Climate Champions and #LiFE Champions.

Based on the Indian government’s Lifestyle for Environment - LiFE initiative, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change along with YuWaah and UNICEF created the Meri LiFE platform.

More than 25 million pro-planet actions were reported through the Meri LiFE platform towards environmental conservation and adoption of LiFE behaviours.

Siraj and his group of volunteers lead weekly clean-up drives at the Ganga river and report their pro-planet actions on the #MeriLiFE application. So far, their campaign ‘Insaan Teri Ganga Maily’ has managed to remove over 15,000 kgs of waste from the river!

Their proactive efforts are also driven to reduce e-waste, save energy, conserve water, say no to single-use plastics, and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

This group of young people is a testament to how #GreenSkills in action can go a long way in conserving our environment.

“I know the good that nature does for us and the threats that climate change imposes.”

Maria Eduarda became increasingly involved in issues related to the environment and the rights of children and adolescents by participating in the Adolescent Citizenship Center (Nuca) in Bonito, Pernambuco, Brazil.

Today, she mobilizes other girls and boys around the importance of actively participating in the decisions and public policies that impact their lives.

Maria represented Brazilian adolescence and youth at COP27.
