Every stage in Wily Beast and Weakest Creature cleared on Lunatic/Extra difficulty without dying, bombing, activating "Berserk Roaring Mode" (i.e., three or more of the same Beast token in a hyper), or using a "Spirit Strike" (either getting hit or pressing the bomb button when a hyper is up).

Stage 1: 0:00 (of course :P)
Stage 2: 3:06
Stage 3: 6:53
Stage 4: 11:31
Stage 5: 16:29
Stage 6: 21:35
Extra Stage: 27:43

A.k.a. UFO meets DOJ, a.k.a. the one with a record number of survival conditions. This game's extra conditions beyond not dying or bombing probably need a bit of explanation. Collecting any combination of five of those tokens you see floating about activates "Roaring Mode", which grants you a special barrier that protects you from one hit and can be manually detonated with the bomb key, just like Supernatural Borders from Perfect Cherry Blossom - the detonation itself when you get hit or press the bomb key is called a "Spirit Strike". However, picking up at least three of the same kind of Beast token (red Wolf, green Otter, or purple Eagle) triggers "Berserk Roaring Mode", which greatly powers up your shots or bombs, with the Otter version also giving you rotating Otter spirits that erase bullets. Berserk Roaring Mode is typically what players refer to when they talk about "hypers", although people also tend to use "hyper" interchangeably with standard Roaring Modes as well. You'll see me refer to the latter as "neutral hypers" in this video, and the condition of "not activating Berserk Roaring Mode" is sometimes described as "neutral hypers only".

Despite all this extra stuff, I gotta say WBaWC has become an unexpected favorite of mine. Without cheesing the whole game with hypers, I find this game's bullet patterns to be very fun overall. A larger than usual number of attacks are fairly "learnable", but with just enough randomness thrown in to keep you on your toes, which is great for keeping them engaging. I also can't get enough of WBaWC's music, especially in the second half of the game. :D Going for even more intense survival challenges should prove quite satisfying - in fact, I'd like to go for a full perfect Lunatic 1cc this time, rather than individual no-bomb and no-miss 1ccs.

A couple extra notes that couldn't fit into the video:
- Very occasionally, you can get legitimately crushed between the dark-blue and yellow rings on Yachie's last spell. This tends to happen when she moves down a lot at once when summoning those rings, which condenses them quite a bit. You can still survive most of the time even if they do get rather tight - the replay I use here is a good demonstration of that. However, I highly recommend that you study different paths through the rings so you can have a backup plan in case you see Yachie move down.
- How you want to time each phase on Keiki's final spell depends greatly on what shot type you're using, as they all have different damage outputs. I suggest experimenting with this attack in Spell Practice to see how you can change up the timing of each phase such that the sets of kunai will be fairly spread out and, thus, leave you with reasonable gaps to make it all the way through. For instance, the slightly off-center positioning I use with ReimuW for the 1st phase is completely intentional - by starting phase 2 around a second later than if I were going for a true speedkill, the blue and red kunai will remain relatively separated throughout the rest of the attack.
- "But what about that Eagle hyper you have after Saki's survival", I hear you asking. The end of "Oni-Shaped Hoi Polloi" is a pretty weird situation: Saki drops five tokens after every spell, but because her survival forces you into the center, and thus right on top of her, this means the game essentially forces a hyper on you. Granted, there is a way to make sure this a neutral hyper. After "Follow Me, Unafraid", start up a neutral hyper but leave exactly two tokens on the screen, making sure one of them is the bomb token Saki just dropped. Once the hyper ends, collect the bomb token and then wait to pick up the three remaining Beast tokens until they are all different - the end result should be you with one bomb token, one Wolf token, one Otter token, and one Eagle token. This way, no matter which token the game makes you pick up first when the survival spell ends, you won't be able to activate Berserk Roaring Mode. In this replay, I made the mistake of picking up the bomb token too early, so I ran the risk of having the survival give me an unwanted token at the end. However, because this is a very unusual circumstance to begin with, players tend to accept just waiting the hyper out before shooting on Saki's last spell.

Every stage in Hidden Star in Four Seasons cleared on Lunatic/Extra difficulty without dying, bombing, or releasing my sub-weapons.

Stage 1: 0:00 (of course :P)
Stage 2: 2:58
Stage 3: 6:38
Stage 4: 11:00
Stage 5: 16:05
Stage 6: 21:15
"Hidden Extreme Winter": 25:24
"Hidden Crazy Fall Wind": 26:32
"Hidden Perfect Summer Ice": 27:36
"Hidden Breezy Cherry Blossom": 28:41
Extra Stage: 29:51

This one was a long time coming. I had done everything except Stage 6 months ago, but getting that last one still took a while, even with me making a compromise and using Marisa instead (I explain why in the video). I'd say the difficulty of this game actually varies quite a bit depending on your shot type, but with so many to choose from, you can certainly find one that matches a playstyle you like.

I have kinda mixed feelings about this game. On the one hand, I absolutely despise how OP releases are, mainly because this makes HSiFS yet another game where clearing Lunatic becomes almost a complete joke, and it's harder to really respect any of the patterns or anything since you can just resource-spam your way through stuff. We haven't really had a game where Lunatic was a legit challenge to 1cc since UFO, I think. On the other hand, I still like almost everything else about HSiFS. The patterns are quite fun (especially in the late-game), the music is fantastic, most of the characters are interesting in their own ways (I don't care about Nemuno though), and you have a ton of variety and potential replayability with all those shot types, even though there's some natural imbalance that comes from that. If releases weren't so hideously OP, I think HSiFS would find a spot on the lower end of my "top 5 Touhou games" list.

Every scene in Impossible Spell Card cleared without using any items.

Day 1: 0:15 Day 6: 18:29
Day 2: 2:37 Day 7: 23:37
Day 3: 5:56 Day 8: 28:45
Day 4: 10:12 Day 9: 33:49
Day 5: 13:39 Day 10: 38:12

Here's a neat little side-game in the Touhou series. Similar to Shoot the Bullet and Double Spoiler, Impossible Spell Card is a more puzzle-based danmaku game where every attack is divided into "scenes", letting you face them one at a time. However, ISC sticks a bit more closely to the standard shoot-em-up formula in that the goal is to shoot down the bosses you face (with one survival card mixed in), rather than taking enough pictures of the bosses like in StB and DS.

The premise of ISC is that after the events of Double Dealing Character, everyone else in Gensokyo wants to capture the amanojaku Seija Kijin, and they're willing to break the Spell Card rules to get it done. Seija, of course, is willing to cheat right back and has a number of items she can use to survive these "impossible" attacks. But as you may have guessed from the title of this video, I won't be using items at all - instead, I'm playing this exactly like I would one of the main-series games and just dodging everything with nothing but my own skill. You'll quickly find that the vast majority of the attacks in this game are nowhere near as impossible as advertised - only Scenes 5-2, 10-4, and 10-7 really come close to that standard, but even they can be cleared with enough effort.

One thing I should note is that even though these are all "no-item clears", there are three items in the game with effects that are always active when used as sub-weapons, yet they won't count against a scene being considered as cleared without items. However, only one of them is actually useful: the Cursed Decoy Doll, which doubles your firepower and gives your shots a little more spread. It might not seem so impactful at first, as you can only hit 5 of your 8 streams at most when shotgunning a boss from below. But this sub-weapon truly shines when you use a technique called "head-sitting" - literally sitting on a boss' head to get all 8 streams hitting. This trick lets you deal huge amounts of damage when you can pull it off, and it's absolutely key to surviving some of this game's hardest scenes. The other two sub-weapons like this are extremely situational at best and completely useless at worst. The Tengu's Toy Camera increases your movement speed, but it's only really useful on a couple attacks and you can survive those without it anyway. The Bloodthirsty Yin-Yang Orb is even worse. This item is supposed to give you an even smaller hitbox, but despite your hitbox indeed looking smaller in-game, this feature is bugged and the game only treats your hitbox as being smaller when detecting collisions with lasers, not bullets. Once you unlock sub-weapons on Day 6, you should pretty much stick with only the Cursed Decoy Doll.

Originally, I didn't have plans to make this video. I first completed this challenge back in 2015, but I only recorded replays of 8 scenes, mostly including the hardest ones in the game. And after spending so much time grinding those 3 nearly impossible attacks I mentioned above, I wasn't really in the mood to go back and make replays of the rest. However, recently a content creator named Spaztique released a draft for the latest chapter of a comic he's making, "Wrath of the Amanojaku", which is based on the events of DDC and ISC. The latest update has the story move into the ISC side of things, and it really got me back in the mood for this game. So with this extra motivation, I went back and made replays for all the scenes I was missing in one day. Don't let the name scare you - ISC is far from "impossible", and I highly recommend you give this game a shot if you're looking for a fun way to improve your skills, and maybe give yourself some perspective when dealing with hard attacks elsewhere in the series.

A 1-credit clear of Ten Desires on Lunatic difficulty without bombing or manually activating Trance mode (using it up after a death is okay).

During the second half of May, the Eientei forums held their 8th Dodging Rain Competition (DRC for short), where players are paired up to play a specific survival or scoring category in the Touhou series (i.e., EoSD Normal scoring, MoF Lunatic survival, etc.) and compete against each other to earn points for one of two teams. In my case, I was assigned TD Lunatic survival - I had wanted to get certain survival challenges out of the way for this game, and the DRC seemed like it would be good motivation for it.

Before this, I had tried to get a no-bombs 1cc with Trances, though I kept messing up my routes and thus not clearing. If anything, going for no Trances as well helped me simplify my game in places by not taking so many crazy risks, and I saw steady progress with stuff over time, especially with attacks that used to give me a lot of trouble. This replay isn't my first LNBNT 1cc, only my best one after playing in the DRC (you get more points for fewer deaths, with bombs and Trances also negatively impacting your score). My goal going in was to get a run where I died no more than 3 times (you can die 6 times at most in a no-Trance run), and after a couple attempts that came up painfully short in the late game, I pulled off this run a few days before the deadline, edging out my opponent and scoring over 200 points (out of 280) for my team.

While it may look like I'm close enough to go for a full perfect 1cc, I wanna be clear here, I have no interest in doing that. I don't like TD survival enough to grind this game over and over just to hope I get lucky on Seventeen Articles, because that's unfortunately what it'll come down to. Scoring's a whole different animal, and I plan to improve on some old personal records, but I'm through with survival in this game.

Seems like a few of the Touhou games I've been playing recently end up being easier to no-miss than to no-bomb. I decided to do this as a quick break from another challenge I was doing at the time (I'll go over it in my next video), and boy was it quick. I spent a bit of time one night writing down a rough bomb/Trance route for most of the game, and I got this run the next morning after only a handful of tries. Yeah, TD gives you a lot of resources, but I don't mind going for stuff like this since I still consider resource management to be a weakness of mine that needs improving. That said, other games will probably still do a better job helping me out there lol.

Behold, my true power! Because holy crap this challenge was... well, challenging. A Lunatic no-bombs 1cc with a B shot, and especially with ReimuB, has to be one of the hardest things I've ever done with Touhou, if not the hardest. I don't think I've ever failed a full-game challenge as many times in such a short amount of time as I have with this. Part of it may have to do with the shot I used, but I knew that going into everything with this game. A bigger issue was me not using more optimal routes for life fragments, because at least some of that was due to laziness on my part - I'm too comfortable with the routes I've been using and couldn't be bothered to improve them without extra "motivation". I think going into this, I felt like I could use my normal routes without issue as long as I didn't completely trainwreck on any of the bosses - imagine my frustration when that kept happening to me over and over and over again, because the bosses in this game are just that hard. Indeed, this replay ended up being one of those runs where I didn't lose too many lives all at once, and you can see just how on edge I was throughout the entire second half of the game. It basically took some really clutch dodging on several key attacks for this run to even be possible.

But you know what? All my critiquing doesn't really matter anymore because I FREAKIN' WON and I can't properly express just how happy I am that I finally pulled this off. DDC has been a hell of a ride, and while I may not play it again for a long time (I desperately need a break lol), I'll always remember this game for all the challenges that it's provided, and that I've overcome.

This is probably my shortest amount of time between Lunatic 1-life clears, at just under two months, and I was really surprised at how quickly I got this one. Even with all the resources in this game, I ended up spending a bit of time researching a rough route of sorts to help me manage my bombs through the hardest attacks. And it paid off really quickly since I completed this challenge the same day I started grinding for it seriously lol. As I would later find out firsthand, DDC is probably one of the few games in the series where a Lunatic no-miss run can be easier than a no-bombs 1cc, but hey, we take those, as they say.

Stage 1: 0:00 (of course :P)
Stage 2: 3:03

Wow, can I just say what a ride this was? DDC is sometimes ridiculed for giving you a ton of resources and for having two shots (ReimuA and SakuyaA) that are really strong for survival. But when you take those two things away and just play the game straight up, you start to realize just how hard this game's patterns actually are. ReimuB was always my main even before I learned how good ReimuA and SakuyaA were, just because I'm used to the "needles-Reimu" archetype, so that wasn't much of an issue to me, though I did have to adjust for her slightly lower power compared to other games.

My story with DDC is a bit weird. Due to real-life circumstances I wasn't able to play this game at first, aside from one week shortly after it came out, during which I got standard Lunatic and Extra clears. It wasn't until January 2015, when I got a new computer that could actually handle the game, that I could play DDC again, and while I dabbled with various stages on and off since then, the only notable new thing I got for a while was a perfect Stage 3. Just goes to show not just how hard, but how consistently hard, DDC's late-game can be, especially with a mediocre shot. After getting my SA Lunatic 1lc recently, I started preparing for Stage 5 by practicing Seija a ton, especially her control-switching attacks, which I knew would take a long time to get used to. Then after FINALLY perfecting Stage 5 after an entire month of work, I felt it was time I finished the rest, and steadily got every other stage over the following month. I always knew Stage 4B would be the last one I'd get too, just because of Yatsuhashi's final attack, but damn was it all satisfying once I pulled it off - I've been waiting nearly four years to be able to make this video.

You may have noticed that Youtube annotations have gone bye-bye. While I'll be keeping the annotations I have for previous videos, I'll be using text in any new videos from now on to provide my usual commentary, character descriptions, Spell Card tips, and the like. I hope it's all just as helpful as before, and I'd certainly like some extra feedback on it if you got any.

At last, it's the big one, the one I've been waiting for all my life! ...okay, it's really been only a few years, but it certainly feels like longer. This is what happens when you develop a bad habit of not sticking to practicing one challenge for too long lol. But regardless, I'm still very happy I finally pulled this off. An awesome challenge for an awesome game, and one that unlike some others in the series, I'm much more willing to come back to later on. Alongside MoF, SA is one of the only games in the series I'm comfortable enough with to think about doing a full perfect 1cc for - even more motivation for me to improve, especially given how sloppy some of my play is in the second half of this video, at least by my standards. My drive is definitely still there for this game.

A 1-credit clear of Undefined Fantastic Object on Lunatic difficulty without summoning any large UFOs.

Stage 1: 0:00 (of course :P)
Stage 2: 2:53
Stage 3: 6:17
Stage 4: 10:18
Stage 5: 15:37
Stage 6: 20:39

If you ever want to turn Touhou into a pseudo-CAVE game, this is probably the closest you can get. Playing UFO without collecting UFO tokens removes most of your potential survival resources, so you have to make do with the life pieces the bosses drop and the bombs you start with on each life. Oh, and the bullet patterns throughout the game are quite hard, meaning resource management is absolutely crucial.

I began to think I had blown my chances when I decided to be cute and not bomb Magic Milky Way, only to die twice anyway. Thankfully I was saved by performing as well as I did literally everywhere else. I perfected both Kogasa and Minamitsu, captured Greatest Treasure, and made it almost all the way to Shou before dying even once. All of that will definitely help give you some breathing room near the end, though I still don't recommend doing what I did on Magic Milky Way. :V

Stage 3: 8:04
Stage 4: 12:53
Stage 5: 18:10
Stage 6: 23:20
Extra Stage: 29:27

Ten Desires was the first new "main" game that came out after I had joined the Touhou community, though I had been around for going on a couple years at that point. I admit I got pretty hyped up for the game after the demo came out, even going so far as to dabble in some scoring. The final version was kind of a letdown though, mainly because the overall difficulty essentially stopped going up after Stage 3. Not to say TD is a "bad" game because of it, just that it could've been significantly better.

When it comes to perfecting stages, however, no matter how easy they may be as a whole, sometimes all it takes is one or two really hard attacks thrown in there to stop you. TD is a textbook case of that, with a handful of really weird and uncomfortable patterns spread across each of the bosses from Stage 3 on. Extra also took a while longer than normal not just because of some of Mamizou's later attacks, but because sitting through everything else beforehand kept boring me out of my mind. An unintended side-effect of mastering the "easier" stuff, I guess.

TD, and currently all the main games after it, has the same replay-crashing glitch as MoF, so the video transitions make a "triumphant" return here. :V

A successful clear of Great Fairy War's Extra Stage.

Just like with the main shoot-em-ups, this game features a separate Extra Stage that you have to unlock. Given GFW's nature as a side game, and the puzzle aspect that goes along with it, the boss's attacks tend to be much harder than usual as well. You have to be prepared to use a lot of resources in case you can't keep up with something, and it definitely helps to build up as many lives as possible. When I played this game more often, I was able to maintain Cirno's motivation up above 500% pretty consistently, even with quite a few bombs used and lives lost. Basically it's all about good resource management, including how you use the freezing mechanic, so take what you've learned in the main game and put down that troublesome witch that stands in your way. :V

Last combination of stages, so Sunny becomes the leader again, which certainly does wonders to keep the overall difficulty down. Which is fortunate, because somehow I ended up with way fewer lives by the final boss than on C1 lol. All that's left is the Extra Stage - not my first clear, which I used to have a video of on this channel, but one made around the same time as these other replays.

Stage 1: 0:00 (of course :P)
Stage 2: 2:59
Stage 3: 7:14

And here's the last Stage 1 in the game, the "Spring Path", which has you face Star Sapphire first. However, just because she's the Stage 1 boss doesn't mean she's any more of a pushover than before. She may be the hardest Stage 1 boss in this game - her last attack in particular gets really uncomfortable really fast, and it's hard to resist panic-bombing during it. Combine this with the "forest" stage for Stage 2 and Luna Child as the leader at the end, and you have what I think is the hardest route in the game. Thankfully I was still able to enter the final boss fight with a ton of lives as insurance.

Stage 1: 0:00 (of course :P)
Stage 2: 2:39
Stage 3: 7:32

Route B2 takes a step back in difficulty compared to B1 now that Star Sapphire is the leader at the end again. Not that that diminishes Luna's difficulty in Stage 2 that much. She's always been very uncomfortable for me to fight, no matter the stage. I'm not too sure if B2's final boss is much harder than A2's though - there's certainly a lack of familiarity with the attacks at play here.
