Sometimes the holiday season can be stressful. But, shopping for toys doesn't have to be. In fact, the good news is that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has reported a decline in toy recalls in the past few years and consumers can shop with confidence.

In fiscal year 2015, CPSC issued 25 toy recalls, way down from 172 in 2008. Even with the decline in recalls, CPSC continues to detect and detain too many violative toys at U.S. ports. These dangerous imports have excessive lead and phthalates, as well as small parts. Thankfully, these toys never reached the hands of kids. CPSC also receives reports of kids who have suffered toy-related injuries and even deaths. A new report released for calendar year 2014 shows an estimated 183,800 toy-related injuries and 11 deaths. For toy-related deaths and injuries, it is important to note that although a toy was associated with many of the incidents, the toy was not necessarily the cause of the death or injury.

Here's what you can do to help keep your little ones safe and avoid these hazards:

1. Choose age appropriate toys by reading the age label on the toy. For children younger than 3, avoid toys with small parts, which can cause choking. In particular avoid deflated or broken balloons, small parts or small balls.
2. Scooters and other riding toys - Riding toys, skateboards and in-line skates go fast, and falls could be deadly. Helmets and safety gear should be worn properly at all times and they should be sized to fit. Avoid riding a scooter on a street or roadway with other motor vehicles.
3. Magnets – Children's magnetic toys are covered by a strong safety standard that prevents magnets from being swallowed. High-powered magnet sets, which are covered by a mandatory standard, also have small magnets that are dangerous and should be kept away from children. Whether marketed for children or adults, building and play sets with small magnets should also be kept away from small children.

Toy safety continues to be a top priority for CPSC, as we work to keep our most vulnerable consumers safe.

So Play It Safe this holiday season by following these safety tips and for more toy and product safety information don't forget to visit www.cpsc.gov.

First Ready-to-Use Needle-Free Nasal Spray Treats Opioid Overdose Emgergency
Dublin, Ireland -- November 19, 2015 – Adapt Pharma Limited (www.adaptpharma.com) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved NARCAN® (naloxone hydrochloride) Nasal Spray for the emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. For multimedia content, please visit http://inr.synapticdigital.com/adaptpharma/NARCAN/

For more than 40 years, naloxone has been trusted by healthcare providers for reversing the effects of opioid overdose, but until today, it was FDA approved only as an injection.

NARCAN Nasal Spray, a ready-to-use, needle-free device, delivers a 4 mg dose of naloxone in a single 0.1 ml nasal spray. NARCAN Nasal Spray requires no assembly or priming prior to use. Adapt Pharma is committed to affordable and transparent pricing of NARCAN Nasal Spray. Group purchasers, such as law enforcement, fire fighters, first responders, departments of health, local school districts, colleges and universities, and community-based organizations that order directly from Adapt Pharma, are eligible for a discounted Public Interest Price of $37.50 per 4mg NARCAN Nasal Spray device ($75 for a carton containing 2 devices of NARCAN Nasal Spray 4mg).

We are delighted to have reached agreement with the Clinton Health Matters Initiative, an initiative of the Clinton Foundation, our first partner in establishing this discounted Public Interest Price approach. "The Clinton Health Matters Initiative is committed to efforts to reduce opioid overdose deaths, including by making naloxone more widely available," said Rain Henderson, CEO of the Clinton Health Matters Initiative, an initiative of the Clinton Foundation. "We believe that the partnership and pricing agreement with Adapt will assist us in helping organizations across the United States to save lives by making naloxone more affordable and accessible for those who need it most."

We expect to announce additional partnerships soon. To learn more, group purchasers may call 844-4-NARCAN (844-462-7226) or email customerservice@adaptpharma.com. For individuals with health insurance coverage, NARCAN Nasal Spray is expected to have broad coverage with affordable co-pays.

NARCAN Nasal Spray can be administered in an emergency by family members, caregivers or others to reverse the effects of opioid overdose until help arrives. An opioid overdose may cause brain damage or death, so NARCAN Nasal Spray should be administered as quickly as possible if a patient is unresponsive and an opioid overdose is suspected, even when in doubt.

In the United States, opioid overdose related deaths are growing and claimed almost 24,500 lives in 2013, or an average of one life every 21 minutes. The majority of those deaths involved prescription opioids and happened in people's homes.

In response, momentum to increase access to naloxone is building. In October, President Obama included a call to make naloxone more readily available as part of a major initiative to address the nation's opioid epidemic. Major medical groups, including the American Medical Association and American Academy of Family Physicians, have also called for increased access to naloxone.

"Opioid overdose is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans in communities throughout the country, leaving a trail of devastation for friends and families," said Seamus Mulligan, Chairman and CEO of Adapt Pharma. "NARCAN Nasal Spray a ready-to-use, needle-free device, delivers a 4 mg dose of naloxone in a single 0.1 ml nasal spray. This new device makes naloxone readily available for emergency use by a friend, family member or caregiver, as well as offering an alternative treatment option for first responders and healthcare providers. It gives new hope to those concerned about the potentially fatal effects of opioid overdose."

Anyone who uses prescription opioids for the long term management of chronic pain, or ...

Society gives humans an advantage over cancer with lodging and transportation programs to ease burden of disease

The American Cancer Society today launched a video series highlighting the unmet access to care needs of thousands associated with cancer treatment. The videos showcase the Society's Hope Lodge, which provides cancer patients and their caregivers with a free place to stay when care is far from home, and Road to Recovery, a no-cost service providing transportation by volunteers to and from treatment for those who do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves.

"Transportation and lodging challenges are a significant barrier to cancer treatment and greatly overlooked," said Raul Duany, senior vice president of corporate communications for the American Cancer Society. "The Society is an important source of support to thousands of cancer patients, easing some of the burdens associated with treatment, and ensuring access to life-saving care."

The impact of cancer on families can be devastating, bringing enormous financial, travel and logistical challenges. One cancer patient requiring radiation therapy may need 20 to 30 trips to treatment in six weeks. A patient receiving chemotherapy may report for treatment weekly for up to a year. And many cancer patients must travel to metropolitan areas for treatment, sometimes requiring extended stays far away from home. Hotel and transportation costs can bring a financial burden that forces patients to forgo treatment.

Last year alone, the Society's Road to Recovery volunteers provided more than 341,000 rides to cancer treatment or medical appointments. During the same year through the more than 30 Hope Lodge facilities across the country and a partnership with Extended Stay America, the Society provided free or low-cost lodging to nearly 44,000 patients and caregivers, saving families more than $36 million in lodging costs.

To create the videos, the Society enlisted the help of high-profile spokespeople whose lives have been touched by cancer:
• Bill Cowher, CBS Host of "NFL Today" who lost his wife to melanoma
• Gilles Marini, actor who lost his father to colon cancer
• Shelley Smith, ESPN correspondent and breast cancer survivor
• Dara Torres, 5-time Olympic swimmer who lost her father to colon cancer

Patients, volunteers and staff share their personal stories of inspiration and highlight the need for more volunteers in communities across the country. The videos highlight how individual actions – whether driving a cancer patient to treatment or providing lodging for those far away from home – are made from the heart with courage, determination and love. Collectively, these actions make cancer insignificant and reveal that today, while more people are surviving cancer than dying from it; humans have an advantage over the disease.

"As a breast cancer survivor, I know that coordinating rides and finding a place to stay during treatment is stressful. Many times, patients have friends and family who are available to take them to and from treatment and provide support and housing, but the American Cancer Society is there to fill a gap when others cannot," said Shelley Smith.

Visit cancer.org or call 1-800-227-2345 to learn more about Hope Lodge and Road to Recovery and how you can volunteer or donate to make a difference.

Dee-1 and Tha Hip Hop Doc release new song for World Stroke Day with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association
DALLAS, Oct. 28, 2015 – Hip Hop Artist Dee-1 thought his family was beating the odds when it came to stroke. He was wrong.

Dee-1 dug into his own family history when he was approached by Tha Hip Hop Doc Rani Whitfield, M.D., to collaborate on a song and music video supporting the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's World Stroke Day campaign. Dee-1 agreed to help because he knew stroke was prevalent in the community and among African Americans in particular, but didn't know it would hit so close to home.

"Once I learned my aunt passed away from stroke, I thought of this project in a whole different light," said the former teacher from New Orleans who is one of hip hop's rising stars. "I'm one of the people who needs to be aware of the stroke warning signs. It's already happened to someone in my family and you just never know."

In addition to supporting World Stroke Day, recognized on Oct. 29, the "F.A.S.T. Song" is part of the American Stroke Association's ongoing stroke warning signs campaign promoting the acronym F.A.S.T. If someone spots (F)ace drooping, (A)rm weakness, or (S)peech difficulty, it's (T)ime to call 911.

Stroke is the No. 5 leading cause of death in the U.S. – No. 2 in the world – but one in three Americans can't name any stroke signs, according to American Stroke Association studies.

"People generally know that stroke is serious and that strokes kill, but they don't know how to address the warning signs when they occur," said Whitfield, a family practitioner in Baton Rouge, La., and American Stroke Association volunteer. "I have patients who took a nap when their stroke symptoms came on, hoping that whatever was happening would go away. That's the wrong thing to do."

Doctors have effective therapies to treat stroke, but there is a short window for the patient to be evaluated at a hospital and receive treatment like a clot-busting drug or clot-removal device. Recognizing the signs and calling 911 immediately is the key, say experts.

"This campaign is a great way to teach not only the warning signs, but potentially save someone's life," Whitfield said. "People will listen to this song because Dee-1 is involved and because it's a good song."

Collaborating with Whitfield for the American Stroke Association was an easy choice for Dee-1, who is committed to sharing important and respectful messages through hip-hop.

"If people hear a message, positive or negative, presented to them in musical form, they are far more likely to have it stick in their heads and incorporate it into their lifestyles," he said. "Hip-hop is a platform where my words and my energy affect people's lives. I have to make my music and my message positive because I want to make a positive impact while I'm down here on earth."

The American Stroke Association's World Stroke Day campaign is part of its Together to End Stroke initiative nationally sponsored by Medtronic. Together to End Stroke teaches Americans that stroke is largely preventable, treatable and beatable.

The hip hop F.A.S.T. Song was produced by Reggie Nic. The music video was produced by tommysTV. Visit StrokeAssociation.org/WorldStrokeDay to see the video and learn more.

Green Mountain Energy Sun Club® donates solar-powered golf carts to reduce zoo's carbon footprint
Philadelphia, PA– Employees at the Philadelphia Zoo can now better serve the thousands of guests who visit each week with the help of 10 new solar-powered golf carts, donated by the Green Mountain Energy Sun Club®. The trams, funded by a $100,000 grant from the Sun Club, enhance the zoo's existing sustainability initiatives while enabling zoo employees to get around the 42-acre park more quickly and efficiently.
Each solar-powered golf cart can generate enough clean energy to drive more than 1,600 miles annually, which is about the same as driving from the zoo to the Statue of Liberty 16 times! The amount of carbon dioxide emissions avoided by using renewable energy to power the vehicles is like planting 200 trees every year the golf carts are in operation. The use of solar power to charge the golf carts reduces the amount of traditional electricity needed to recharge the vehicles by 50 percent.
"Every non-profit the Sun Club works with is unique, and every sustainability project is different," said Tony Napolillo, executive director of the Sun Club. "Philadelphia Zoo was chosen to receive this solar donation because of its positive influence in the Philadelphia community and its integrated conservation strategy that includes educational programming, wildlife conservation campaigns and onsite operational sustainability."
The Sun Club began in 2002 as a program of Green Mountain Energy, the nation's longest serving renewable energy retailer. Since then, the Sun Club has donated more than $3.8 million to sustainable programs in New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Texas. Contributions to the Sun Club come from Green Mountain, as well as the company's residential customers, employees and supporters who believe in the program's mission to support local non-profit organizations through solar and sustainability projects. In addition to this donation to the zoo, the Sun Club has dedicated solar projects to other non-profits in the Philadelphia area, including Greensgrow Farms, Green Woods Charter School and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) on behalf of local customer contributions.
"The Philadelphia Zoo is an essential part of our community," said Mike Starck, managing director, Green Mountain Energy. "The implementation of the new solar-powered golf carts affirms the zoo's commitment to excellence in animal care and to inspiring guests to conservation action. The Philadelphia Zoo is the ideal recipient of a Sun Club donation because they truly lead by example."
"We're excited to see how this donation from the Sun Club expands our sustainability initiatives and inspires employees and guests to take steps to protect and preserve the environment," said Dr. Andrew J. Baker, chief operating officer, Philadelphia Zoo. "We strive to continuously improve energy efficiency at the zoo through energy use management and facility improvements, including the purchase of the new solar-powered golf carts. We've set ambitious goals for continuing our sustainability mission through 2018 and look forward to an ongoing relationship with the Sun Club to meet those goals," Baker added.
With more than 1.35 million annual visitors, the Philadelphia Zoo aims to educate the community, model sustainable practices and provide visitors with tools for taking action to live greener. The zoo's operational sustainability program includes goals and supporting tactics for managing its environmental footprint in five key areas: continuously improve energy efficiency, reduce and manage greenhouse gas emissions, consistently conserve and reuse water, thoughtfully manage stormwater on site, and conserve resources and avoid the use of hazardous materials through waste diversion and green purchasing.

USA Catholic Church App Only One to Offer Exclusive Coverage of Pope's U.S. Visit
Leadership of the Catholic Church in the United States has introduced its first mobile app: USA Catholic Church. Designed to draw millions of Catholics closer to their faith by providing access to Church information on all screens and devices, this is the only app that brings together information from all Catholic sources: parishes, dioceses, the U.S. bishops and even the Vatican. Not only will the app include religious news, daily scripture readings and local parish content, it will feature exclusive, in-depth coverage of Pope Francis' September visit to the United States.
"This is the most comprehensive virtual connection to the Catholic faith available," explains Bishop Christopher Coyne, chair elect of the Committee on Communications, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which created the app. "We understand many people are looking for more ways to connect with the Church and incorporate Catholic living into their busy lives?that's exactly what this app is designed to do."
App content is available in both English and Spanish and lets users:
? Follow Pope Francis with the latest news and communications, including videos and photos.
? Access unique mobile features: view daily readings, make mobile donations, receive news alerts, get Vatican and Catholic News Service updates, and have the ability to share via social media.
Additionally, the USA Catholic Church app will offer up-to-the minute coverage of Pope Francis addressing a joint meeting of Congress and the United Nations, as well as the public at the World Meeting of Families. The Pope will visit the United States from September 22-27, 2015.
In October, new parish and diocese functionality will be released, allowing users to:
? Stay in contact with local dioceses and parishes through individual pages with mass and confession times, homilies, events, blog posts, videos and bulletins, and locate local parishes at home or when traveling with a "Church Finder" tool that works by location, city, state or ZIP code.
"This is the first Pope to address Congress and the United Nations," says Bishop Coyne. "It's truly a historic moment for the Pope, and the USA Catholic Church app will provide news and coverage that people simply can't get anywhere else."
The USA Catholic Church app is free to download from your smartphone or tablet device at Google Play, Apple iTunes or www.USACatholic.church. It is available in English and Spanish.

The United States Surgeon General today issued a call to action to address major public health challenges such as heart disease and diabetes. Step It Up! The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities articulates the health benefits of walking while addressing the fact that many communities unacceptably lack safe and convenient places for individuals to walk or wheelchair roll.

"Everyone deserves to have a safe place to walk or wheelchair roll. But in too many of our communities, that is not the reality," said Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, the 19th U.S. Surgeon General. "We know that an active lifestyle is critical to achieving good overall health. And walking is a simple, effective and affordable way to build physical activity into our lives. That is why we need to step it up as a country ensuring that everyone can choose to walk in their own communities."

Data consistently show there are safety and accessibility issues that make communities less walkable. A 2013 study by the U.S. Department of Transportation, for example, found that 3 out of every 10 Americans reported that no sidewalks existed along any streets in their neighborhood. In many communities violence ? and the perception of violence ? may prove a barrier to walking.

The Surgeon General calls on community planners and local leaders to create more areas for walking and wheelchair rolling and to prioritize the development of safe routes for children to get to and from schools. The call to action suggests that these designs should include sidewalks, curb cuts, crosswalks, safe crossings for the visually impaired and more green spaces. The Surgeon General further calls on city managers, law enforcement and community and public health leaders to address safety concerns by better maintaining public spaces, working with residents to promote a shared sense of community ownership, ensuring proper street lighting and fostering neighborhood watch programs.

The Surgeon General's report discusses the health benefits of walking and calls on individuals to make walking a priority in their lives. Fewer than half of all U.S. adults get enough physical activity to reduce their risk of chronic disease, and only a quarter of high school students get the recommended amount. Physical inactivity contributes to heart and lung disease, diabetes and cancer, which account for 86 percent of our nation's health care costs. Building walking into daily life can reduce disease and save money.

"We know that an average of 22 minutes a day of physical activity ? such as brisk walking ? can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes," added Dr. Murthy. "The key is to get started because even a small first effort can make a big difference in improving the personal health of an individual and the public health of the nation."

New Food Marketing Institute Foundation Website Motivates Families to Get Back to the Table
ARLINGTON, VA ? September 1, 2015 ? Families across the country are committing to one more meal together each week this September in celebration of National Family Meals Month?. The value of family meals is well known: from increased self-esteem to improved grades and reduced risky behaviors to better nutrition. Helping American families achieve the goal of one more meal at home each week, the food retailer industry has developed and launched a new website with multiple resources, www.NationalFamilyMealsMonth.org

"September is the perfect month to spotlight long-term benefits of family meals, and start a conversation that inspires people to share more meal occasions at home with items from the grocery store," said Cathy Polley, RPh, executive director of the Food Marketing Institute Foundation, which supports the role of food retailing and focuses on research and education in the areas of food safety, nutrition and health. "Juggling the demands of modern life?school, sports, jobs and long commutes?can sabotage the best laid plans for family meals. We want to help Americans make wholesome meals together, at home, a modern family tradition ? not just in September, but all year long."

The website, www.NationalFamilyMealsMonth.org, is filled with tools, tips, and meal-planning ideas to make it easier for families to have one more meal together per week. The website also includes links to more than 75 partners ? primarily food retailers and manufacturers ? also committed to helping consumers achieve their increased family meals goal. In short, families can find support from their favorite local supermarket and food brands.

The FMI Foundation also is encouraging Americans to join the National Family Meals Month movement by pledging to one more breakfast, lunch or dinner at home per week. Shoppers can post pledge photos, mealtime pictures, favorite recipes and shopping tips or even post a selfie wearing a favorite oven mitt with the hashtags #raiseyourmitt and #familymealsmonth.

TIKI® Brand and The Chew co-host Clinton Kelly partner to reveal the secrets to effortless outdoor entertaining
MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. (June 16, 2015) – People across the country are taking the party outside this summer – from hosting casual get-togethers in the backyard to outdoor movie nights to holiday parties. The key to a successful outdoor soirée is all about focusing on the elements that will make your party stress-free and fabulous.

"Don't feel the need for everything to be perfect," Clinton Kelly said. "I love to mix and match my table, so my plates don't look like they all come from the same box. You can also do this with your glasses or silverware. Then I add a really unique centerpiece, such as a TIKI Brand Glowing Table Torch. It combines a natural flame with an LED light that illuminates the glass from within and creates a stunning visual effect for the center of your table."

It is a common misconception that lighting is only important for indoor parties.

"Do focus on the lighting," Kelly said. "Lighting not only sets the tone for the party by creating the perfect ambiance, it also defines your space. I like to line the perimeter of my space with TIKI Brand Torches, so that my guests know where the party is and they're not wandering off to different areas."

Music is also an important element to setting the mood for outdoor entertaining.

"Do create a party playlist," Kelly said. "A good host doesn't have the time to be a DJ. I like to choose a decade, like the '90s or '70s, and create a playlist that I can just set and forget."

Swiss Watchmaking Brand is the Official Timekeeper and Watch of the First Triple Crown Winning Race in Nearly Four Decades

WEEHAWKEN, NJ (June 6, 2015) – Longines, the internationally renowned Swiss watch brand and Official Watch and Timekeeper of the Belmont Stakes, timed American Pharoah's historic Triple Crown win at Belmont Park on Saturday, June 6th.

An enthusiastic crowd of 90,000 attended Belmont Park cheering loudly for the chance to watch history unfold. After a quick start, American Pharoah kept his stride to win the Belmont Stakes and secure the Triple Crown. His exciting run will be remembered for years to come - cementing 2015 as an important year in the history of horseracing.

In 1978, Affirmed won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes to achieve what's considered the greatest accomplishment of a thoroughbred racehorse. Now, more than 35 years later, Longines had the honor of timing American Pharoah's successful runs at all three races – a feat that has only happened 12 times before.

After each victory, American Pharoah's owners, trainer and jockey were presented with timepieces from the Longines Conquest Classic collection. To further celebrate this momentous win, Jennifer Judkins, U.S. Brand President for Longines, also presented Zayat Stables (Owner), Bob Baffert (Trainer), and Victor Espinoza (Jockey) with elegant, rose gold Conquest Classic watches to mark the occasion.

This year, the brand hosted the second annual Longines Most Elegant Woman at Belmont fashion contest to celebrate the elegant style associated with the Triple Crown. The chic ladies of Belmont walked the runway for celebrity judges who selected the most elegant woman and awarded her a stainless steel and rose gold watch from the Conquest Classic Collection featuring a stunning diamond bezel. Longines Conquest Classic watches were also presented to the winning horse's owner, trainer and jockey of the "Longines Just a Game" race.

Longines' passion for equestrian sport dates back to 1878, when it produced a chronograph engraved with a jockey and his mount. First worn on the racetracks as early as 1881 and extremely popular among jockeys and horse-lovers, this model enabled its user to time performances to the seconds. It was already being used by most sport judges in New York in 1886.

National Hurricane Preparedness Week 2015 runs from May 24 through May 30

Hurricane Preparedness Week reminds us it's important to not only be educated on the dangers of extreme summer storms and hurricanes, but it's imperative to be prepared for them. This year's hurricane season begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30. Start preparing your home and family now to be fully prepared for whatever Mother Nature sends your way this hurricane and summer storm season

Hurricanes are unpredictable; even expert meteorologists can't predict their wrath. To help keep your family safe during this year's hurricane season, Generac Power Systems offers the following tips:

• Charge your electronics before the storm hits. No one can predict if the power will go out during or after a hurricane, so it's better to be safe than sorry. Charge your cell phone, computer and other electronic devices before the storm hits. Put new batteries in flashlights and have a backup case of batteries in a watertight container.

• Stock up on essentials. Having gallons of water, a storage room with food, extra batteries and waterproof emergency numbers on hand is a smart idea on its own, but will come in extra handy if you can't leave your home during a hurricane. If you have little ones, create an activity box full of games, cards and books to keep them busy—and yourself stress-free—during a storm.

• Remove all outdoor furniture prior to the storm. Patio furniture, plants, trash cans and children's toys can become airborne during high winds, causing damage to your home. Place them in a garage or shed.

• Invest in hurricane-proof windows and garage doors. When hurricane winds blow, they can damage not only your windows, doors and roof, but the actual structure of your home. Invest now in wind load and impact-resistant garage doors, and hurricane-proof windows to ensure the structure of your home stays protected.

• Have a backup generator installed. Automatic home backup generators, such as ones from Generac, automatically turn on if a hurricane knocks out the power, and remain on during extended outages until power is returned, giving you and your family peace of mind and a sense of safety and security during a storm. They are safer and more convenient to use than portable generators, and more affordable than ever, with a $1,899 starting price.

Even if you don't live in a hurricane zone, use these tips to prepare your home for extreme summer storms. Preparing your family now, before the storm hits, is the best way to prevent damage, power outages and stress during this year's hurricane season.
