From silence to sound, from isolation to confidence, this is Fatuma’s story.

At just 16 years old, Fatuma from Rwamagana District, Rwanda, lived much of her childhood in silence due to hearing loss. She struggled at school, at home, and in her community — until the Winsiga Ndumva programme, a partnership between UNICEF, the Rwanda Biomedical Centre, and ATscale, provided her with digital hearing aids.

For the first time, Fatuma heard her mother’s voice clearly. Today, she attends school with confidence, helps her family at home, joins traditional dance groups, and dreams of becoming a doctor to inspire other children with disabilities.

🔹 The Winsiga Ndumva programme is working across 8 districts in Rwanda to ensure children like Fatuma get access to ear and hearing care, including screening, treatment, and hearing aids.
🔹 With an investment of US$1.2 million, the programme aims to provide 1,200 children with hearing aids and screen 9,400 children while also training health workers and teachers.

Fatuma’s journey shows what’s possible when strong partnerships come together to ensure no child is left behind.

Joshua now walks to school and plays with his classmates. At home, he loves helping his mom with small chores.

But this might not have been possible without the kinesitherapy services he received early on.

Thanks to support from the Switzerland and Liechtenstein National Committee for UNICEF, children with mobility challenges are accessing early detection and therapy services to prevent permanent disabilities.

With timely care, children like Joshua can take confident steps toward their dreams💙

The Winsiga Ndumva programme aims to improve ear and hearing care through collaborations with the Rwanda Biomedical Center, local government, and disability organizations.

Initially piloted in four districts, Winsiga Ndumva has expanded to nine districts as of 2024. The programme focuses on providing audiology equipment, digital hearing aids, training health providers, and integrating services into local health systems.

It has trained over 130 health providers, oriented thousands of community health workers, and supported children with hearing impairments.

Winsiga Ndumva represents a significant step in Rwanda's efforts to enhance disability services and improve quality of life for those with hearing impairments.

UNICEF Rwanda, in partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Arts (MoYA), the National Youth Council (NYC), Generation Unlimited, youth-led organizations, and other key stakeholders, joined young people in Gisagara District, Southern Province of Rwanda for the Special Umuganda of Youth.

This activity focused on tree planting to enhance the community’s resilience to climate-related hazards and empower young people to take the lead in addressing environmental challenges and contributing to sustainable development in their communities. More than 2,000 young people—including girls and boys—came together to plant trees in Kibirizi Sector of Gisagara District, in the Southern Province.

The Special Umuganda also marked the national launch of the Green Rising Project, a global Generation Unlimited-led initiative aimed at supporting youth-led climate action, helping 10 million young people be the climate advocates their communities need for a just green transition by 2025. After a day of planting, participants gathered for the Green Rising Concert, where artists performed, and speakers emphasized the urgent need for concrete green actions.
