How can Data Analytics help expand the reach of mobile money and increase financial inclusion in Sub-Saharan Africa? IFC and the MasterCard Foundation brought a variety of industry practitioners together in Dakar, Senegal for a workshop to explore the subject matter. This video captures what some of them had to say.
Philippines is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia where MSMEs contribute substantially to its GDP and job creation. Despite this, financial inclusion remains a challenge. Based on the World Bank Group’s FINDEX data only 12 percent of adults 15 years old and above have formal borrowing which translates to approximately 8 million Filipinos out of the Philippines’ population of around 100 million. Today, the International Finance Corporation is working with the Philippine government on the Secured Transactions reform which seeks to broaden the use of movable assets as collateral for MSMEs to access finance. Secured Transactions reform is a critical part of the World Bank Group’s Financial Infrastructure program funded by donors like the Government of Japan, Government of Korea and Switzerland’s State Secretariat of Economic Affairs (SECO). This video highlights how key stakeholders within the Philippine Government and private sectors have come together in pursuing the Philippine Secured Transactions Bill to promote greater financial inclusion.

The successful commercial close of 750MW Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Park in Madhya Pradesh, has helped India get closer to its 100 GW solar energy goal by 2022. The public private partnership initiative utilized a robust project structure and innovative de-risking mechanisms, paving the way for other large scale solar power projects in India. With a record low tariff of US Cents 4.4/kilowatt hour offered through a competitive bidding process, the project achieved the lowest tariffs ever awarded for a solar project in India, bringing them at par with fossil fuels for the first time. As transaction advisor appointed by the government of Madhya Pradesh, IFC played a strategic role in advising Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Limited in designing the structure, balancing public and market risks, and creating a competitive auction process. Rewa Solar transaction is the recipient of World Bank Group’s President’s Awards for Innovation and Excellence. It is a remarkable story of story of scale, collaboration, and innovation that led India to achieve grid parity in 2017.

The Middle East has become one of the most fertile grounds for start-ups. As governments and big companies struggle to provide solutions for the region’s major problems, disruptive technology has opened up new options and opportunities. One of them most successful start-ups in the Middle East is Careem, which has become a popular car service almost overnight. Energy 24 is another start-up that hopes to soon bring solutions to the Middle East’s power outages. And with youth unemployment one of the most pressing problems in the Middle East, several start-ups are creating impressive numbers of new jobs. Since 2011, IFC has invested more than $50 million in tech start-ups, incubators, and venture-capital funds across the region. #IFCmarkets. Video by Stephan Bachenheimer
