<media:description>With so much talk lately about tariffs, and so much misunderstanding of what they are and even what they are for, I thought I’d share this story about bicycle tariffs in Canada for some context. A quick note: In this video use the words “tariff,” “duty” and “import tax” interchangeably, even though, technically, they are different, even if they largely have similar goals and impacts.

<media:description>Proposals to turn back alley laneways into bike lanes rear up occasionally, which I've always dismissed as a backdoor way for motorists to dominate the streets completely. But a recent detour on my daily commute has me rethinking that position, so I went on a mission to test if there's a way that we can do better with those forgotten and neglected public spaces behind our buildings.

0:00 How I found myself riding a back alley

2:11 Mixed opinions
3:26 Laneways have a role, just maybe not as bike-lane alternatives
4:11 Potential laneway improvements
5:32 Laneways as public spaces
6:17 Visiting the city with the best laneways
7:39 Three other laneway projects that work

I don’t really do proper product reviews, but here are some products that I’ve tried on this channel that I like. (Of course, you don’t need anything fancy to ride a bike, other than a bike, but these are Amazon affiliate links, and I get paid a small commission if you buy them 😉)

• If you ride a bike in the city, you need a good lock. Litelok is a good option: us.litelok.com/SHIFTER
• If you wear a helmet and like to be well-lit, consider the Lumos: ridelumos.com/shifter
• Hindsight sunglasses have mirrors so you can see behind you while you ride. Plus, they look good: https://collabs.shop/f9hvof
• Love these RedShift Acrlight Smart LED Pedals: https://redshiftsports.com/collections/arclight-pedals?aff=40
• Crane Bicycle Bell (the ding is sublime): https://amzn.to/48gsHQ2
• Bicycle Cargo Net (why did it take so long for me to buy one of these?): https://amzn.to/31s1Ovu
• Vaude Cover II Rain Poncho (for higher-end, try Cleverhood or People’s Poncho): https://amzn.to/3jLkift

<media:description>Perhaps the defining battle in the UK's culture wars in the past few years has been over LTNs, or &quot;low-traffic neighbourhoods.&quot; Depicted by some as a &quot;war on cars&quot; and by others as a simple plan to preserve residential neighbourhoods, the skirmishes over these ideas have even become national election issues. So I got a tour of one of these neighbourhoods and realized the things that make up an LTN might already be in your neck of the woods.

Thanks to Jakub Mamczak of the London Cycling Campaign for the tour of his neighbourhood.

7:36 Are they actually controversial?

<media:description>Have you ever really thought about the full costs of your car commute? It can be shocking.

Car dependency is depressingly expensive and stressful. A new study by MarketWatch surveyed people about the impacts of car costs on their lives and the results struck me. Not only are many of us spending a huge proportion of our income on automobiles – often more than we can afford – these struggles have a huge impact on our well-being. The worst part? For many people, these are not optional costs because there are no other viable forms of transportation.

Shifter Big Stories, presented by Riese &amp; Müller. This is the third video in a series exploring the most important stories in urban cycling and transportation. A big thanks to Riese &amp; Müller for their sponsorship that enabled the creation of these videos.

In this video, I’m riding the Riese &amp; Müller Load series, which are well-built and thoughtfully designed electric cargo bikes. They are smooth and fun to ride and haul so much stuff, from children to groceries to refrigerators (yes, it’s true): https://www.r-m.de/en-pt/bikes/load-60/

<media:description>We’re in the midst of a housing-cost crisis that is dominating headlines. But one element of modern city life that rarely enters these conversations is the cost of transportation. But that’s strange to me because transportation costs can greatly impact our lives.

Shifter Big Stories, presented by Riese &amp; Müller. This is the third video in a series exploring the most important stories in urban cycling and transportation. A big thanks to Riese &amp; Müller for their sponsorship that enabled the creation of these videos.

In this video, I’m riding the Riese &amp; Müller Load series, which are very well-built and thoughtfully designed electric cargo bikes. They are smooth and really fun to ride and haul so much stuff, from children to groceries to refrigerators (yes, it’s true): https://www.r-m.de/en-pt/bikes/load-60/

Thanks to these bike shops that lent me bikes to ride:

<media:description>I have a new bike! It's a Priority Eight, and I've been riding it for a few months and it's pretty great. But this video is my attempt to recapture the magic of my all-time favourite bike by replacing the flat handlebars on that Eight with some slightly more relaxed and comfortable bars without losing the fun and zippiness of the bike.

Looking for a specific handlebar shape or type? This website is incredible: https://whatbars.com/

If you care, here are the rough specs on the bars I ended up using: Width: 670 mm. Sweep: 40-degrees. Rise: 60 mm. The closest bars listed on whatbars.com is the Dimension Urban Cruiser.

<media:description>(Cycling has, for a long time, been divided by some imaginary barriers. Barriers that separate road cyclists and mountain bikers and BMXers and wheelie kids and cargo bike moms. But in his new book Live to Ride, longtime cycling journalist Peter Flax makes the case that it's time we move past these imaginary divides and together embrace the things we all love about cycling.

2:33 How divisions between cyclists grew

<media:description>What I found most interesting about this full-time, publicly funded bike valet parking program is, not that it reduced bike theft (although that is probably enough reason on its own to do this) but that it encouraged different types of people to ride their bikes downtown than they might otherwise do it.

Do you think fear of bike theft is a deterrent to people riding bikes?

<media:description>I've often wondered if some cities have inherent qualities that lend themselves to cycling more than other cities. And when one city recently declared itself the cycling capital of Canada (rather presumptuously, in my opinion), it gave me the nudge I needed to break out the spreadsheets and whiteboard.
In other words: This is me looking at a Victoria, B.C. and Montreal, Quebec, to see if they have some kind of cycling secret sauce.

A huge thanks to my sponsors this year. They support this channel, so please support them. They also make amazing products that I use every day and endorse without hesitation.

Priority Bikes: I happily rode Priority for years before they signed on as a sponsor this year.
I’m currently riding the zippy and fun new Priority Eight: https://alnk.to/1XWoxFO
I’ve ridden the Priority Continuum Onyx through many Canadian winters: https://bit.ly/3tzXTee.

Two Wheel Gear: My favourite bike bags and panniers, and the best convertible backpack-pannier that I’ve ever used: https://twowheelgear.com/?utm_source=youtube&amp;utm_medium=shifter&amp;utm_campaign=tombabin

Buy my book Frostbike: The Joy, Pain and Numbness of Winter Cycling: https://rmbooks.com/book/frostbike/

• Peak Design phone case (the one I use, paired with the Peak Design phone mount): https://amzn.to/48giWS6

<media:description>How the &quot;mobilities of care&quot; is starting to change the way people think about bicycle transportation in cities.
