TWilight refrAIN (TWAIN) is the sequel to TWilight INSanity (TWINS). The setting seems to be a completely different world, magical instead of virtual (though is that really the truth?), but the mechanics are fairly similar; see my TWINS video for details.

The main mechanics differences are:
- No extra lives. Instead, if you get hit, you autobomb for the cost of 3 bombs (cost dependent on shot type). If you don't have the spirit to autobomb, it's game over.
- Higher crystal multipliers. The x1 to x4 bonuses from speedkilling still exist, but you can gain higher multipliers by being close to the enemy, up to 2 (max x6) from normal enemies and 4 (max x8) from bosses, based on the circle around your character and the boss respectively.
- More transparent route system. Instead of needing to deduce the correct dialogue options, each choice gives rings, which determine route. After making a choice once, the ring count is displayed on future runs. High/low P-rate can also give a +1/-1 ring adjustment. There are still 3 routes, but the role of letters/numbers is swapped, with route 3 as the best ending/TLB. Also, sometimes different routes have different stages entirely (stage 2 can be B/C1, stage 3 can be C2/D, where the C's are variants and B/D are unique).
- Rank system. Rank slowly increases by collecting score crystals (with a boost at the end of the stage, and for capturing enemy magic), and drops slightly on manual bomb and by nearly a full rank on autobomb. Each letter rank has a dramatic effect on difficulty (ranks C/B/A/S could roughly be considered Easy/Normal/Hard/Lunatic, and SS adds revenge bullets), and doubles the value of score crystals, from 1600 at rank D to 51200 at rank SS. The intermediate + ranks don't affect difficulty.
- Secret Magic. If you meet a stage-specific requirement, and never autobomb in that stage, midbosses/bosses use an alternate, generally more difficult final attack (added to the end of the battle for stage A-C midbosses and stage F bosses; otherwise it replaces their Enemy Magic).
These requirements are:
A: crystals (small items from multiplier kills, rank-dependent)
B: P-rate reduction
C: score items (large point crystals)
D: buzz (graze, rank-dependent)
E: x6 enemy kills
F: total twins rate 48-52
G: total P-rate under 5%
Sequel midboss: total score (rank-dependent)
Sequel boss: rings and total P-rate, autobombing allowed
I: no secret magic, just Twilight Refrain.

Due to the rank system, and the no autobomb requirement (the only place an autobomb won't fail the challenge is the last pattern each stage), I had to play on the easiest difficulty to have a chance at an all Secret Magic run. Starting rank changes how fast rank increases-- with initial rank B it'll reach rank S soon enough unless you keep autobombing to reduce rank.

Mikahashi twins, confusingly named Rurika (spread bubbles) and Ririka (needles), have the highest speed; I chose them since they have an easier time getting proximity multipliers and collecting score crystals.

The most difficult Secret Magic threshold to meet was the twins rate in F3. I needed to ensure Ririka was around 51% at stage C1 Chira to force solo Rurika (this team fights Chira solo with whoever you've used less) then actively keep Rurika ahead for the rest of the game, since Rirka would be the natural choice against bosses.

TWilight INSanity (TWINS) is a rather obscure 2008 PC danmaku game that I started playing because a friend was interested in the series story, of all things. Since there's almost no footage of the game, I thought I might as well upload a video?

This is the C route (best ending/TLB), which requires making the correct dialogue choices and having a sufficiently low P-rate. P-rate increases over time based on the number of enemies on screen, and by 1/10 of the distance to max if you get hit. P-rate decreases by collecting E-crystals (from speedkilling enemies and canceling bullets) and capturing enemy tensions, but keeping it low is mostly about survival.

This game actually has a pretty difficult Normal to 1cc, much more than Touhou Normals. There's the general pattern density (5C/6C in particular). The life count is very low (still not sure what causes the stage 4 midboss to sometimes drop a 1up; it didn't drop this run), one lower than it looks, since you game over the moment your lives reach 0. Tensions (bombs) don't give invincibility, only a single screen clear and boosted shot power for a while. You auto-tension if you get hit with at least 1 tension (which costs you all your tensions and E-crystals), but being hit too much can raise the P-rate too high to stay on the C route. And for some reason, focusing has a delay to take effect! Trying to move smoothly by mixing focus/unfocus typically just leads to dying.

Scoring in this game seems to be about survival (auto-tension is very costly!), maximizing E-crystals by speedkilling enemies for x4 (aside from the direct points, every 700 E-crystals are worth a tension), and using those tensions to auto-collect score items and speedkill enemies for more items/E-crystals. Bosses tend to be a mixture of survival and speedkills/cancels for E-crystals, to build up tensions for the stage portions. Capturing enemy tensions also gives a decent number of points (directly and in the stage clear bonus). Graze (buzz) exists but seems to be mostly irrelevant; each graze becomes a single E-crystal at the end of the stage.

Saijou twins (Yuuri laser, Mayuu spread+homing) have the highest shot power, but it comes with a movement speed so high they can be hard to control. At least that means the focus delay is less relevant, since it's more reasonable to dodge without unfocusing? Their two tensions are very different, so you need to be careful which you use-- Mayuu's tension spawns columns of piercing lasers covering the screen (good for clearing stage enemies), while Yuuri's spawns a group of powerful homing bullets (good against bosses, bad against stage enemies).

See my previous video for info about the game and scoring system.

This was my first run to not unintentionally break the AS up to stage 5. I've also rerouted much of my grazing since my previous run... significantly higher PIV gain now, and I have enough of an AS buffer to stall more nonspells for Learning Curve value. Several mistakes on stage 6 though. 50b should be possible.

In future runs, I'll be timing out Severing Chain (stage 5 penultimate spell), which is worth about 3800 graze, increasing the AS from ~1.1m to ~1.5m PIV... extremely risky to do at the end of the longest and riskiest AS in the game, but it should be a dramatic improvement to the stage 6 cash-in. I'd rather have a 50b route that doesn't rely on Eastern Aspects of Existence, if possible... look at my spell history on the final spell.

It's been what, 6 years since I last used this Touhou channel? This was mostly a recording test, but I thought I might as well upload it. This game lags too much for me to stream, as is typical of the Danmakufu engine, but it seems mostly decent recorded? Plenty of lag in the stage 4+ bosses though. (I might try recording at 480p to see if it reduces lag, but I'm pretty sure YouTube won't make it 60fps unless it's at least 720p...)

I'd describe this game's theme as "reality-breaking". Not only the visual/gameplay effects, but very unusual teams (all of which can be fought in stage 4 with suitably chaotic medleys), and similarly strange dialogue due to a memory-modification plot...

Scoring in this game is a combination of grazing and survival... the goal is to extend your Aspect Shifts (bombs-turned-hypers, which cost 1 power like in MoF/SA), by collecting items and grazing. When an Aspect Shift runs out, you gain a score+PIV bonus depending on its total duration (plus if it ends due to stage clear, any remaining duration)... to the power of 1.3.

Spell card bonuses and AS bonuses depend on your PIV, so scoring primarily focuses on extending ASes as long as possible.

If you die or deathbomb during the AS, it ends early and you get little to no bonus! (Bombing normally gives full bonus but still ends the AS.) That's why it's also a survival-based system... and this is well above average difficulty for a Normal mode. I still have yet to clear a run with no major mistakes (deaths or deathbombs), given the game difficulty, and this is only the second time I've captured the final spell in a full run.

This run is with Aya/Kosuzu... probably not the optimal scoring team (Youmu/Koishi gain 1.25x AS extension by grazing, and Youmu's AS gives an 8-way shot that can speedkill bosses), but Kosuzu's AS, Learning Curve, is very interesting... it slowly increases a power multiplier (displayed at the bottom-center) and PoC range for the entire run, giving her very strong homing by the latter half of the game, and full-screen auto-collect by the end.

Shining Shooting Star (东方夏夜祭 or 東方夏夜祭) is a Touhou fan game with the most Touhou-like scoring mechanic I've seen.

This still has notable room for improvement (failed Rakukun's 1st and Tensei's 3rd, and missed a star fairy in stage 6), but I was planning to upload a video whenever I reached 4 billion, to show off the game/scoring system to people who might not yet know about it.

For anyone unfamiliar with this game--

The main mechanic is the star items, dropped by bosses and most large fairies. Star items change color as they fall down the screen, from blue to pink to green. Blue stars give +5000 PIV, pink stars give a life part (lives require 3-5-8-10-12-15... parts), green stars give a bomb part (always 4 parts per bomb). Like in UFO, you have to choose between collecting resources or score.

Additionally, a border gauge fills up from star items, power/point items, and canceled bullets. The border color depends on the last star item you collected:
- Blue borders auto-collect items (and give PIV*40 points)
- Pink borders increase shot power (and give 10,240,000 points)
- Green borders break like in PCB if you're hit or press the bomb button (and give 2,000,000 points if not broken)
You can freely bomb during blue and pink borders, but if you die during one, you lose the bonus. (The bonus is double what's displayed in-game, by the way.)

Borders also increase a hidden PIV multiplier by .1 per successful border. This multiplier reaches over 4-5x by late-game, so every border counts.

The border gauge can't fill up if you already have a border, so it's better to wait to collect stars/items/canceled bullets if a border is still active, so they count toward the next border. (Unless it'd cause a star item to drop below blue-- that 5000 PIV is important, so stars should be collected at the top anyway.)

There's also a Last Spell system (each stage has a minimum border count needed), but those are only on Hard and Lunatic.

Oh, and the boss names are Ami, Rakuki, Seiryuu, Kage, Rakukun, Tensei. (The default thumbnails somehow only had images of Ami, Seiryuu, and Kage, so I uploaded a suitably eventful custom thumbnail.)

This game is too hard! Bomb, bomb, bomb! Have to reach 200 graze for more bombs too!

...which is enough to clear, apparently.

Not reaching 200 graze in a chapter that's otherwise survived consistently? Bombing for the 200 graze (as Sanae at least) is actually advantageous-- 3 bomb-grazed chapters give a life, which is worth 3 more bombs plus a death (and when out of bombs, you may save another bomb or two before dying by surviving inconsistent patterns that'd otherwise be planned-bombed).

Many of the stage 5 and 6 chapters do require 2 bombs if you can't dodge them, though-- so it's important to build up a stockpile of lives for those (by finding whichever chapters can be reliably survived while still reaching 200 graze). The rest of the patterns sustain the total resources with 1 bomb each, as long as 200 graze is reachable during the bomb.

And yes, I know about the stage 4 3rd spell safespot (see my spell history), but I forgot to use it in this run. I wasn't able to consistently learn the (possibly safer) supergraze for Seiran's last nonspell and spell, but the resources weren't needed anyway.

This took about 7-8 hours of playing since I started trying LoLK Lunatic, including stage practice etc.

I guess the hundreds of hours of Easy did at least partially carry over to Lunatic somehow?

It's been over 3 years since I was going for my Lunatic 1ccs in the pre-DDC games...

Finally? And with 3 lives remaining?! I think I got pretty lucky here with Reimu's orbs hitting the later bosses. I rarely enough even reached Yumemi without continuing.

Anyway, I started trying this again a week or two ago after not attempting it in at least a year. This sort of dodging is still not really the style I prefer, but it was still fun in its own way. I'm pretty sure the music contributed.

I still need to work on not dying as much. This stage is actually pretty hard for an Extra.

I think this is actually technically my first 1cc of SoEW Hard-- an 14,858,500 non-clear was my highest score when I started today.

MarisaB's bomb is still quite tricky to use on Easy.

Just missed 800m, a few obvious mistakes like not going to the PoC early stage 4 (and a few missed 2.0s as usual), and I've improved my use of Marisa's lasers a bit when going for MarisaB... perhaps I'll improve this sometime.
